So what do you guys think of the MacBook air. It's definitely made for mobility, however it is quite basic.

i think it will suck b/c theres no CD drive, so no games, no movies, no burning, etc.

plus only one USB port, a headphone jack, and one other jack that i dont know of

Well it has the capability to share an optical drive with another computer, and it would also work well with the new apple movie rental thing. I think that it would be good for a school that needed a mobile computer lab. A teacher could just check out the cart of laptops and there you go they don't even have to leave the room, kind off expensive idea though, but I'v heard of it. I think that this is one of the first steps towards the "wireless revolution." I however would still like to have an optical drive on my computer, so I may wait on getting this type of computer.

Oh yeah the other port is the micro DVI port, I think it works jut like the mini DVI on the Macbooks

john is right that it has the Remote Disk thing but frankly i can't see spending almost 2 grand for a thin web browser. I also think it needs more usb ports seeing as how if you want to use a mouse (non-bluetooth) and a SD/Comfact Flash/Memory Stick (<- lol)/whatever reader you will be forced to use the touch pad. I can this this being used for presentations (maybe) or just to WOW a client other than that.... (sidenote if you dont have another mac computer on the internet how are you supposed to install? and isn't it kinda weird to walk up to someone and say "Hey I need to install this new software can I use your Disk drive?")

It is a little inconvinient to only have one USB, you would have to get a hub. I however am more surprised that they don't have any firewire ports, didn't apple start that? I think that this would be more of their bussiness type computer. Does anyone know about the solid state hard drive, how does it work.

sounds like a joke to me.
we all know how safari works.
and the apple movie rental thing is a joke. i laughed when i saw on itunes that they had movies to rent.
how about we all say whats on our minds for this thing? p2p.
except from the last time i talked about that, im not really supposed to even say those three letters/numbers.
but that could be one possibility.
considering the size of the thing, what is the internet capability and the memory size?

Iff Hydralisk has posted the above, the above is stupid.

I tested one out at my local Apple store and it is amazing. The screen, keyboard (they had black paper there so you could test the backlight), and overall the entire laptop were beautiful. They had the external SuperDrive plugged into one and I pulled out an audio CD and tested its speed over USB. It's pretty decent. Not as fast as my MBP by far, but still decent.

The only thing that really bugs me about the Air is that there's no FireWire port. WTF Apple? You're the ones who created it, and lots of people who are buying an Air are gonna wanna transfer some, if not all, of their Time Machine backup from an existing FireWire HDD.

Ah well... For me the Air will always be sitting in the Apple store.

Way, WAY, to expensive for me to even consider it. $1800? I could buy two laptops with the same, if not better, specs for the same price. I agree with Hydralisk... this product is a joke.

Edit: It occured to me that size is a big selling point. Size for laptops has become much the same as engine size in commercial vehicles. For cars, 250hp is simply too much. You're never going to use it, nor notice it. For the Macbook, that 0.[tiny decimal] inch difference between it and your previous notebook, and the whole 2 pounds difference, is going to go completely unnoticed.
