Save the Whales Explainedallynfolksjr
"There it is, staring at us right in the face for over 6 years."

It seems one of the most prevailing mysteries in the calculator community, one that has sparked untold numbers of forum posts by newcomers, is what exactly the "Save the Whales" option does in MirageOS. Brandon Wilson, the creator of msd8x, has managed--through mystical and complicated methods that many others can only hope to one day understand, finally discovered the secret.

It does nothing.

Unless you count setting the bit to show that it's checked. That doesn't mean it was always that way. In MirageOS 1.0 the option actually does do something; if you create folders with certain names it will rename some built in commands by means if a token hook it installs. Just one example is that the humble fnInt( becomes JaSoNiSr33t(. You can find more information here, including instructions. Remember that you need to find a copy of MirageOS 1.0 to actually view this first hand in all of its glory. A download is provided on the information page.

Wow, that was kinda random. Guess that option was an easter egg of sorts in older MOS.

Why did they stop making easter eggs for programs they was always fun to find.

They didn't stop...Save the Manitees and lots of other easter eggs are in other Detached Solutions applications.

I always thought that real life whale-saving did some good for nature or something. I guess not, though...

Re: Save the Whales Explainedgrandmoff22
That is all incorrect. If MirageOS does not get a keypress, and "Save the Whales" is checked, it will suspend the program rather than running through an idle loop, saving the batteries, which saves the environment, thus saving the whales.

Re: Save the Whales Explainedbrandonw
Right...perhaps you'd like to provide some disassembly addresses to prove your point. This whole "battery saving" thing was a joke by someone by the name of JcN on a news post on ticalc.org...he later goes on to say in that same article that he doesn't even know assembly and read it on a Detached Solutions FAQ (go to detachedsolutions.com, you'll see there's nothing like that there).
