usb8x 0.11 and msd8x 0.93 ReleasedAndy

usb8x 0.11 and msd8x 0.93 have been released. As previously reported, Dan Englender has been working on a host driver for the USB port in the 84+ and 84+ SE. Brandon Wilson proposed msd8x for Summer of Code and was not accepted, but decided to work on it anyway.

The new version of usb8x contains embedded drivers for more devices, inlcuding USB Mass Storage devices (FLASH drives) and gamepads. msd8x is the main application for mass storage devices, allowing one to copy variables and programs to and from the calculator, as well as run programs or view pictures directly from the device (if there is enough free RAM on the calculator to temporarily hold it). A modified version of Phoenix which supports gamepads as well as the calculator buttons is included with usb8x. I can't find the log of it right now, but this was successfully launched from a flash drive which was then swapped for a gamepad.

These programs together take the gaming experience on an 84+ to levels not even dreamed of two years ago! Great work and keep it up!

Ok I think I get it so you can use an adapter along with the usb cable for your calculator to use things like a mouse or game pad to play games. So you would probably need a program with this type of inteface. Now about the mass storage would you be able to run programs from that or how does that part work?

You need a special USB cable to adapt your 84+ USB port to a regular A female. Then you can plug whatever USB device you like into that. https://serialio.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=141 is an example. You can put your MirageOS/Ion programs (the 8XP files) on your FAT16-formatted USB flash drive, plug it into said cable, plug that into your 84+, run msd8x (with usb8x and MirageOS oncalc) and press ENTER on the 8XP...that runs it.

This is very cool. It sure is good to see some people still bring innovation to the TI community.

Sounds amazing. Right after my 84 broke, of course :P.

This sounds really cool, but I don't think a calculator is really an ideal device for gaming with external peripherals and stuff. If you want to do that get a desktop computer But other than that, I can see how this could be used. I wonder if it would be possible to plug in a usb light (the kind you get for seeing the keyboard) and see it at night... Although that doesn't need drivers... But you could plug in a keyboard, right? Also, I think it would be cool in later versions to allow hubs to connect multiple peripherals. Then you could connect a keyboard, mouse, and monitor to it and use it as a highly portable computer, and docking station :)

Hubs are a major PITA from a coding standpoint, as the USB hardware in the calc doesn't do anything with them... 22:39:10 < Andy_J> Dan_Eng: what's the official work on hubs as of now? 22:39:53 < Dan_Eng> Andy: I haven't worked on it since forever. 22:40:02 < Andy_J> it's still a major PITA right 22:40:07 < Dan_Eng> Yeah. 22:40:47 < Dan_Eng> Andy: I'm basically waiting for some docs on the USB hardware to magically appear. Otherwise it's probably not going to happen. 22:40:54 < Dan_Eng> At least I'm probably not going to code it. If you want hubs, go make a driver for it yourself. :P

The USB light thing has been done by (I believe) netham45. I don't know where I read it, but knowing him, it could've been anywhere. Simply initting the device turns it on because it just draws power from the port.
