GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | Andy | As reported on ti-news.net, GB68K allows you to emulate a GameBoy (original) in your calculator. You need to provide the ROMs yourself, but once you convert them to calculator variables and send them, it's easy to play. In informal testing, 2 of the 3 ROMs I tested are playable (Zelda looked flawless, Golf had some minor display problems. Super RC Pro-Am hung on a splashscreen, but didn't lock the emulator).
While this may seem exciting, it is not perfect. It runs slow, uses a lot of memory (ROMs are typically huge), doesn't support sound or linking, and requires vertical screen scrolling. I'm also sure it kills batteries. On positive notes, it supports savegame memory and will even compress savegame files to conserve your (otherwise strapped) memory.
Granted, the image on the right is taking this concept one step further (I did that in my high school Graphic Design class) but we're getting closer. :) The image below is what The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening looks like on a 92+ in VTI.
GB68K runs on all 68K calculators, but is only practical on the V200 and 89T because of thier increased archive memory.

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | Andy | I guess I should also say that that screen shot is running about 4x faster than VTI did... And VTI was set to not limit the calculator speed. It's quite a bit slower on my 89T. Here's a speed reference: The number in the top left corner is how many frames per second the GB emulator thinks it's putting out. | | 24 Apr 2005, 15:37 GMT |

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | JcCorp | This is just really cool. I hope it works fine for the 89 Titanium as well, because a lot of people at school are going to be excited. | | 24 Apr 2005, 15:45 GMT |

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | Andy | It does. I have Zelda and Golf on mine right now. :)

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | zkostik | Wow, very cool!
Seeing this sugests that a 83x emu may be finally coming too (GB was a 3 or 4 MHz z80)!

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | Andy | Yeah, well... Let's not forget that the LCD would need to be scrolled in BOTH directions, it's a pain to do grayscale on the 83x series, and the GB's *modified* z80 proc has some MULT instructions... I don't see it happening anytime soon. Let's just say that Photoshopped image up there is probably closer to reality for the 83x series. ;) | | 25 Apr 2005, 15:24 GMT |

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | zkostik | No Andy, I meant it the other way. Emulate 83x on your 68k, pretty much the same thing we see with GB68k. Not sure if this is even needed, but would be fun nevertheless.

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | Andy | Ahh, now that makes sense. It would be cool, and you'd still have some screen room left over for say status information (such as how fast the emulator is going, or something like that... I don't know). | | 26 Apr 2005, 12:10 GMT |

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | calcprogrammer1 | What???
How come the picture is a ti 83 plus but it is for the 68k models?
I have an 84 plus se and want it to be for z80 models. I don't understand why the pic is a z80 calc. | | 28 Apr 2005, 16:40 GMT |

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | Andy | That picture has nothing really to do with things... Read the whole article. It's explained that it's a faked image I did for a class... If you would look at the image you'd see that if it were real the innards of the calc would have been replaced with the innards of a GameBoy... That is almost definitely possible, I might take a look at doing that sometime... | | 28 Apr 2005, 20:41 GMT |

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | Coolv | Where's the punch line?
No, just joking.
Nice project. | | 5 May 2005, 14:59 GMT |

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | fonky | Is it only me (and my friend) or does the rom conversion program not working?
When I tried to open it, it said that there was some sort of error.
Did this ever happen to anyone else? | | 7 May 2005, 07:38 GMT |

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | Master_Zog | The syntax is "CartConvert mario.gb mario", where mario.gb is the rom file you're trying to convert. Also, the second name ("mario") must be 6 characters or less. | | 8 May 2005, 12:46 GMT |

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | Andy | The legal answer is you dump it from your Zelda cart yourself. That's the only answer you're going to get from us. Though Google can help you... | | 11 May 2005, 20:42 GMT |

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | huntercjcarroll | Ummm... What does that mean...? | | 12 May 2005, 16:31 GMT |
|
| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | Andy | That means you buy a piece of hardware that plugs into your computer that has a slot for a gameboy cartridge. | | 12 May 2005, 17:18 GMT |

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | huntercjcarroll | ahhhh.... Where might I get one of these and how much do they cost? | | 12 May 2005, 17:57 GMT |

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | Coolv | It says "Though Google Can Help You".
This is not true.
If you do not have a ROM, you will never have any use for this program.
I have searched for hours to no effect. | | 20 May 2005, 17:39 GMT |

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | Andy | I say from experience that Google can help you find ANYTHING, you just need to know the magic words... | | 24 May 2005, 09:00 GMT |

| Re: GameBoy Emulator for 68K Calculators | greenorange | Amen. It also helps to know the special search engine tips, like quoting two words together, and other things like that.
BTW, an interesting site to help people fine the necesary "software" to make use of this program can be found in ticalc's news thread on gb68k. | | 24 May 2005, 15:50 GMT |
