Okay people, I will soon add a chat. This is going to be more of a testing at first as I want to see how well I'll work and how people behave. Obviously, chat can not be controlled as the forum so if people start doing things they shouldn't, I'll remove that feature. I'm currently working on the chat script because I'll most likely only let registered people to use it and trust me, I'll be better for everyone that way. Also to note, chat sessions will be logged and I won't hesitate to remove misbehaving users.

Oh yes, please let me know what you guys think of that idea in general. Any comments (and ideas), be it good or bad are welcome.
Thanks.

"Logged chats" - Big Z is watching you :)

Not a bad idea, even though I think it won't have many (any) people 90% of the time.

I agree with spiral. But, though it may not be used too much, it is faster than using the forums to chat.

Z, log into AIM if your still online, Spiral can you do the same? e-mail me your screen name. I've wanted to test out the chat client on my mac yet but I have no one to talk to.

GREAT IDEA!

I love it!

That way people with lots of questions-spiral, you remeber RickBrown, right? Well, people like that, can just go to the chat.

I think that would be great.

Like, for heated debates, we could just do that, and remeber when Digital and Sigma_Eric where chatting so long?

chats by no means can replace the forums. We're not going to see 10+ people on chat to talk with. Even if people did chat like D and Sigma did, they'd still have to use forums/AIM to arrange a chat. And using AIM to schedule would kind of negate the idea of using calcgames' chat. Most users like rickbrown would still be unable to get quick help because few people will stay on the chat 24/7, and they'll be idle if they do. Btw D, my screen name is (Spiral8Helix), of course no parans.

1 sentence doesn't make a paragraph, when your sentences are connected in ideas like that, make them 1 paragraph instead of double spacing it. You could also do the same for your first two exclaimations.

I think chat would be useful for quick discussions and such. Maybe quick questions or perhaps as a substitute to those who can't go into AIM or are on public computer where this software is unavailable. Anyway, we'll see if it worth keeping or not.

I've cooked a test version so far and its pretty nice. The login part is not done yet, so you can choose any name. If you'd like to try it out, or shall I even say "use it", just go [HERE]

Have fun, please let me know what you think and report any problems if you encounter any.

I don't think you should have the <just sitting...> thing, because peopel might accidently pree their enter and print that to the forum like 500 times, or people might press enter twice by accident.

some suggestions: once login is done, allow admins to *boot* users as warnings, and is there any flooding control right now?

yeah, i'll add these features soon. the chat script i got is really basic, but this is exactly what i wanted so that i can easily customize it with features we want (it of course had to be free as well...).

also, the chat window only keeps 100 most recent lines, so it won't really flood anything. logging will also be selective so that only things i want will be logged (that's why this feature is turned off right now). i might actually turn it on for now until i finish the login system...

Did we not have something like this in the beta stages a few months back? Before we got our link back on TI's site.

Yes we did, but that script was big crap. The one I've found a few days ago (the current one) is a lot better and it looks rather promising to me.

Z, I think this is great! I've actually never "talked" to anyone here at CG, except for you, Z. And I'm looking forward to actually being able to chat with people soon . . .

But, I have a suggestion: what about people sending requests tousers to come to the chat room? Sort of like with AIM, but that way, you'd know if someone wanted you in there-and you wouldn't have to post in your message-"lets set up a time to chat." Just a sguesstion . . .

EDIT: Hey, just checked out the chat room! Love it! Looks fine to me! Other than the feature I talked about above, seems okay. I like the, "update users" idea, makes it seem professional .

I can change refresh to as low a 1 sec, though that'd take up more bandwidth. I however think a 5 sec refresh would be decent. No, you can't do that with JS. There are Java applets but they're not customizable and we won't be able to edit their source code to fit our needs either.

EDIT: Okay, the refresh is now 5 secs and its really fast. Almost like the realtime chat.

You have to specify time zone calcfreak. Z is Eastern, myself, S, and B (If he'll come) are in Pacific and your in one of the two I can't remember the name of.

Go to the room if you want ot chat right now.

8 or 9 in pacific would be 11 or 12 where Z lives, pretty late already.

I checked out the chat, I tried leaving it on, but it's constant refreshing is obnoxious.

btw, calcfreak, spell "tomorrow" correctly in your sig.

Last semester I found that Z usually replied to his e-mails at midnight his time and about 6 hours before that also. I haven't tracked him down on his online hours this semester yet.

But what about my suggestion? :)

"What about people sending requests to users to come to the chat room?" Like, you know, with AOL IM, you get requests to go to the chat room? How about that?

*****EDIT: SOMEONE COME CHAT WITH ME! :) IT'S 7:00 WESTERN!****

Ahhh . . . NVM . . .I sat there for 10 mintues. :(

i don't like when people are onlien and posting while i'm doing so, makes me have to check twice before logging out.

Calcfreak, did you REALLY need to triple space your lines?

Well, we also have a Java chat that came with our server. Though, we can't have a static chat room there and someone needs to run it and create a chat room and then everyone else can connect there. Lets decide on a time and I'll or someone else will host a chat room.

well, we might as well just meet over in AIM if D has it up already. how's that sound?

I can't get around the blocking on my school's server for AIM. Z, e-mail spiral the url I gave you that points to my school schedule. Then we can coordinate (hopefully) a time to do this whole thing. BTW, if the chat party happens to be Saturday, I can't host; it is my Uncle's birthday party. I'll jump in if I can spare a few minutes.

Now that I'm a second semester senior, I'm basically free. hee hee hee. All I have to do is pass.
And this chat script may turn out to be a good idea. At first I was thinking it was kinda silly, but it may actually turn out well. I did try out the test chat program. It's not too bad. Besides, 5 seconds isn't all that bad, because you need time to type resondes and read the posts anyways. However, to be frank I usually don't spend a lot of time on the site so I'm not sure if I'd chat or anything. Maybe I'll leave a window open when browsing the web and check on it every once in a while.
