Redux will be an admin at calcgames.org..... he seemed more than happy to post news and expressed an interest in writing a newsletter and some other things.

i guess we'll call him R...

I've seen Redux around before, but only enough to recognise his name. I'm in the same boat as S, though; Where the heck did he come from (figuratively)? Anyways, congrats and welcome Redux!

(I'm glad i'm not the only one in the dark, can someone turn a light on?)

i've "worked" (never got anything done) with redux on a project (can't tell anyone what it is, i don't think). there were a few other people involved.. but redux was the one in contact with me the most and he was just talking about how he wanted to be part of a website with a "futre".... i didn't say calcgames.org really has a future (it might...) but told him he could be a news editor. he also expressed an interest in writing a newsletter.. and i told him that was possible.

kind of weird.... but from the contact i've had with him he seems very educated (on AIM all of his comments have perfect grammar spelling and punctuation) and has had experience in stuff like this.

It would have more of a future if the games got updated, not that I'm hinting at anything ;)
But really, things seem to be running pretty smoothly here. The forum has had major updates, a new poll is in plan, there was that chat thing in the plans, and we've trialed and errored things such as ads and a store.

Thanks B. I'd be supprised if this site went down all of a sudden (no activity) especially considering what Z has improved over the past few months. Though I'm starting to loose some interest in calculators, I haven't begun to loose interest to this site. If it stays, I'll stay.

i pretty much have no interest in calculators now, today I cleared my 89's memory (ram and flash), and i didn't even really worry that I don't even know what's on my 89 to restore. Helping out people and this site is still important tho.

i'm kinda like S. i sometimes play games when i get early to my classes. i however will still be around the site and still work on it and add thigs. i'm not going anywhere (and the site will be up as long as i'm here) and i like to do this kind of stuff. we probably won't make any more of our own games, but we can still keep this community intact.

Z, we need a new script for R.

one that will go through the user database and if they want to recieve the newsletter will send them an email with whatever html text R has inputted.

this shouldn't be too hard, should it?

I don't know any of the email perl commands so i can't do it... at least not alone.

well, i guess is hould ask R... he says he can do php.... not sure if i should give him ftp access, but i'll ask him if he wants to write something.

what exactly do we need? we need a mailer script of some kind? okay, that sounds pretty easy. isn't teemz supposed to have that feature built in already?
as far as admin rights, i dunno...contact me via email if you wish to discuss this.

alright.... i've sort of altered mail.cgi (the one you made before but we haven't changed to work on this server) and i got it to send a bcc to 2 people and it works fine (except it doesn't get past my hotmail spam filter..... i don't consider that a problem, though).

all we need is an interface .htm page with a subject box and a text box.

all emails will be from (Newsletter) newsletter@calcgames.org.

we also need it to go through the user database and look for people who have the "send me emails" box checked, and add each name to the to_name with commas in between.

it'll need to check for admin status.

also another change is that it needs to be an html formatted email... i was unable to make it html formatted.

i can't think of anything else that needs to be added... it should be a very simple script.

So...you're going to send the newsletter to everyone who has checked that little box? And thats probably at least 3/4 of the people who have regrestered...

That might be considered spam.
If you're gonna to mass-mailings, you need to read all of the mass-mailings laws; and you'll probably need a privacy notice.

definitely not 3/4.

much, much lower...

and no it's not spam. it's not an advertisement. it's a newsletter, and they subscribed to it because they want to get it.

alright... i got the script working.... there were a LOT of emails sent.

i sent a test/tell people about the newsletter and why they are subscribed thingy.

a lot of addresses did not work.

tell me if you got it.

tell me if you got it but aren't subscribed.

tell me if you didn't get it but are subscribed.

I got it. I suppose I'm suscribed.

But even though it was sent to my e-mail address realated to calculators, outlook's rules didn't pick it up and move it to my non-personal folder, it's a minor inconivence, but i guess I can live with it.

Oh, just got the test e-mail.

BTW, will it be in HTML? If it is, then I won't get it; it will be marked as spam by yahoo.

yes it will be in html.

most emails these days ARE html formatted, but i suppose yahoo can detect just how much html code is in the e-mail... the test e-mail was html formatted but there wasn't much html in it.

yahoo is kind of stupid about e-mail filtering.

I didn't get the test e-mail, but tha's not surprising since my Spiral@calcgames.org e-mail doesn't seem to get anything at all.

you can also put our newsletter email address into your safe list so that it doesn't get put into spam folder...this may be a good idea btw.
