Hey everyone, recently I've and my friends have been getting lots of spam email. I'm sure everyone gets spam, so it's important to not catch any computer virus from it. Make sure you never download and open any attachments from senders unknown to you. Also, never open attachments that have files with .pif, .exe, .com or .scr extensions as they are usually used for virues. Always have a good and updated antivurus software running.
Okay, now why am I writing this? Well, because I had email from folks who received email from calcgames.org which we DO NOT send. Firstly, we do not do any mass mailing and sencondly, we would never include any attachments. If you receive suspicious email with attachment you didn't ask for, even if it seems to be from someone you know, its better to just delete it. Knowing this and just being careful can and will reduce the amount of virus driven spam email because viruse writers try to take advantage of unexperienced users.
Just for a reference, many current mass mailing viruses will search thru your computer and send spam to any email addresses they find in your contact list or even plain files and that includes your browser's temporary folder. Thus, if you catch a virus it could be sent to all emails found in the browser cache. It may be a good idea to turn the cache off or allow your browser to clean it once you exit the program.

Alright, that's about it on this topic. Feel free to post comments and your experience or strategies fighting spam.

I got a bunch of spam in the past 24-48 hours. Some viruses read the recipient's address book and make it look like the spam is from someone they know...

Oh yes...macs! Actually, I don't usually get much spam but sometimes whole loads come in. I have already stated the reason. Speaking of opening it, hardly anyone is using macs and unix and for there's got to be a large audience for viruses to attack effectively - in this case its windoze. Speaking of your email, wasn't it you who changed it not so far ago because of spam? lol D
i like the answer tho: what do you do to fight computer viruses? buy a mac! hehe n1

I get a bit of spam, mostly i sign up for anything with an alternate e-mail address, so I don't get too much.

I only open e-mails, but not attachments. I don't usually like to think about what's in the attachments... But I hate spam in general.

NO kidding! I got an e-mail from CalcGames.org, bu it was in my YAhoo! Bulk Mail Folder, so I knew something was wrong. I scanned it and it turned out Norton Anti-Virus was like going out of control. . .and yeah.

Like I said, someone who visited the site had a virus on their comp and as they browsed the site and your browser cached the files, virus found various emails and spammed them...
Btw, enable Auto-Protect in your NAV. It'll slow down your comp but will scan every file. Anything your browser dls, files extracted by installers or when you uncompress files. It also takes care of those frequent Kazaa viruses even before offending file fully gets onto your comp.
Those spam emails are usually really easy to tell apart from legit mail.
