Does anyone know a safe program i can download to split a .AVI file into 2 or 3 files? i have a 91 minute video i would like to burn with nero, but it wont fit and still play on my DVD player. i figured my best plan is to split it onto two disks, because i dont want to kill my quality (its only a bitrate of 128 anyway... compared to my 320+ music)...

Well, since Nero doesn't seem to want to make it fit I'm guessing it isn't recoding it into the proper format for a DVD either so that's not going to do you any good. You'll have to get a DVD mastering program. Nero's DVD Video option works IF AND ONLY IF you already have DVD format file -- AVI isn't. For a 91 minute DVD format video, you'll want something upwards for 3.5GB. Go get NeroVision Express. :) Nero Burning ROM only converts video files for VCD and SVCD.

VirtualDUB all the way man! It's free and packed with features... You just can't go wrong here. I use it all the time when I need to resample, convert or split videos. Very good prog.

Oh, and bitrates for video files are completely different from that of audio files. A typical video file has 128kbps audio (which is plenty, even for music) and 1mbps or so video. Now, if you stop and think about it, there is a LOT more information that needs to be saved for video, and if they get by with 1mbps then 128kbps for audio is more than enough.

ya, 128 is CD-quality. Anything more than that is wasted.

128 kbits for MP3 isn't even close to CD quality. Listen to it through nice speakers or headphones and you can quite easily tell the difference in sound quality. 128 has just been arbitrarly defined as CD-quality, it's also convenient because ~1megabyte/minute. I have to rip my music at 192 kbps, to my ears, there is close to no difference.

I use 192 for most stuff, but for things like TV shows or whatnot it's fine (at 128).

I'll tolerate 128 when I'm using online radio stations, other than that, I won't accept anything less than 160, and yeah, 192 is my prefered rate.

there's actually some really good codecs for compressing speech as opposed to music. You can get really good speech quality down to even around 20-40kbps i believe. Most videos aren't oriented around music, so 128 is usually plenty.

Same here, usually use 128 or VBR in videos. My music is 192 as it sounds much better than 128. I most of the time can't tell the difference between 192kbps mp3 and CD... As with speech spiral, there's much less frequency bandwidth used hence even lower bitrate mp3 sounds fine. With music its different but it once again also depends on the music. Generally, using a VBR is the best way to keep size down and bump the quality but a good bit, provided you have a good mp3 encoder.

I can't tell that much, but all my stuff is at 192 kbps or VBR.

128-9999999-192 all sound the same to me. sound is sound and it doesn't get better than what you got

nope, but it does stop it from skipping as much. When i burn a CD with a low bitrate, it tends to skip easier...

weird, should be the opposite way. it'd skip more on higher bitrates if it can't keep the read buffer full. i'm not sure how exactly your player would work other way unless the mp3 file has glitches in it...

i have a fairly new CD player, and it sounds WAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY better with a higher bitrate... dunno why, but it does skip at lower levels... (im thinking it is trying to read nonexistant data...) but, of course, im not an expert...
