If you need to run DOS programs and commands, I believe that Windows XP still has a command prompt. Just go into Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt. It has all the functions of DOS, I believe.

recovery console might help depending on what you're doing.

What exactly are you trying to do?
Ther's no more DOS in XP and command prompt is basically emulated. You can use recovery console to recover some stuff or get a copy of dos on the web but make sure that version supports ntfs (if your file system is fat32 any version will do). If you can clarify exactly what you're trying to do, we'll try to help you out. :)

Well, from what I've heard you could probably find a good emulator on download.com. However, I would suggest partitioning your disk and installing an older version of Windows there, like 95 or 98.

to all: you can have windows XP in DOS. you must first restart your computer, and hit the function key. it will then prompt you to to which mode you would like: windows or DOS. That simple.

by saying windows no longer has DOS is like saying the new version of ti84 will have no basic programing systems. its illogical.

It doesn't have DOS on it, but you can tell the BIOS to bypass the OS. And no, it's not illogical. What are you trying to do anyways?

You wouldn't need to do that for ASM.

For games you need an emulator (or at least for Arena you do, so I'm assuming it's the same for all games).

DOSEmu
RamSoft Emulator
DOSBox

One of those should work.

Cool. Yeah, I had two old games I wanted to run. One of them is this totally awesome Need for Speed game. Its graphics are excellent. And it was made back in the days of 95! :drool_a:

I never actually used any of them, so I don't know if they're any good. All I did was google DOS emulator, and linked to some of the results.

@LiK: No, when you bypass the OS from the BIOS, you go into the BIOS. Duh. MS-DOS stands for MicroSoft Disk Operating System, and was the precursor to windows, not necessarily the foundation for it. In the old days, you had to load windows from DOS, but not any more, thank you very much.
