Hey folks, I've been asked multiple times as to how one can get rid of those corrupt files that are sometimes left in the file system by crashed Firefox down loader or something else (p2p, etc.).

Those files are generally unopenable and when you try to delete them, a message comes up saying that files is in use, despite the fact that no program is really using it anymore. Reboot doesn't seem to help and command prompt also says that the file is in use.

Well, there are several things you can do to dispose off those offending files, first is:
1. Remember where your file was.
2. Run -> cmd to open up dos
3. ctrl+alt+del and kill explorer.exe process (that will kill Win gui but we need that done so that no files are locked by it, I'd also recommend to close other apps as well if needed)
4. Alt+tab to your dos window and navigate to where your files is(if you don't know or forgot your dos commands, read this page -> http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/dos7comm.htm)
5. type del [filename]. MAKE SURE you type is correctly so you don't delete something else by accident

That should take care of the problem. Though, if it doesn't you can use this Unlocker utility to assist you (you can grab it here -> http://www.calcgames.org/site/pub/unlocker185.zip). Once you install it, it will integrate into context menus, so just right click on your offending file and click "Unlocker". Program will show you which process locks the file and will offer to unlock it. From personal experience, however, I find the program to not work all the time so the manual method is still my top choice. The Unlocker is still useful to determine which program locked the file and such so it's definitely good to have on your tools flash drive. :)

Well, I hope this helps some of you. Those who don't need this now may need this in future. Hey, you never know!

Or use Opera, a browser that DOESN'T crap all over your filesystem.

And doesn't display various things properly. But it wasn't the point here but rather what to do if you happened to have a corrupt file in your f/s that needs to be dumped. Would apply to virus clean ups too, for that matter.

thank you Z. i have never had that problem with firefox, but i have had that problem with other prgms messing up my computer files. Mainly after i had to save my computer from a crash, it "saved" my files, but didnt delet the curupted files, and i lost alot of disc space. if i knew how to do it, i would have just deleted the old files, but it turns out i just reformatted the whole darn thing.

Sigh, sucks that you had to reformat. Here's something for you to keep in mind next time this happens. I've only had this happen like 4 times for the time I've had a computer so I can't say that's a biggie but I like being in control of my stuff so undeletable file cannot go unpunished. Hehe
