I always hear people talking about graphical engines for TI games. What exactly are these 'engines'? Are there such things as BASIC engines? Where do you find something like that?

Again, it's a generic gaming term. An engine is the code that makes a game work, the guts if you will. You might hear of a game being made using the Quake 3 engine, that means they took the guts of Quake 3 and applied new artwork, maps, characters, etc., but they didn't have to come up with the code for making rooms, walking, shooting, etc. from scratch.
