Here we'll run some calc tests to see how each performs. I'm sure everyone of us already seen sites showin this kind of stuff but for some reason all of them show very different information. That's why we decided to conduct serious of our own tests.
Okay, if you know some good math functions that take a lot of time to computer BUT exist on many different calc (at least TI83 series, 86, 89, 92 series, HP49G, Casio CFX 2 and possible some other quite recent calcs). So, post your functions here and how long it took your calc to complete them. Please post functions that take at least two secs to execute, this is to decrease timing errors. Later on, we'll make a summary of posted info for everyone to check out.

Can we make a list of what we have to work with here? I have these:
Casio AFX 2.0
HP-48GX
TI-89 HW2

We can use the tests on the site I linked you to, zhostik.
One thing that took my TI89 several seconds to do was solving the equation for a circle (X-H)^2+(Y-K)^2=R^2 in terms of Y. I will time it on all three calcs and report the results later.

The same equation that AlephMobius posted. From some of my own speed tests the version of the OS makes a considerable difference, i.e. v1.0 will easily beat v2.08.

Time on TI-89 HW1 2.08 = approx 4.5 sec
Time on V200 2.07 = approx 2.9 sec

If someone has a v1.0 TI-89 OS please e-mail it to me.

solve function of my TI89 HW2 AMS 2.05 returns y=-Sqr(r^2-x^2+2hx-h^2)-k or y=Sqr(r^2-x^2+2hx-h^2)+k in about 4.2 seconds
Solve function of my Casio AFX 2.0 returns Memory Error (Checking on whether I am doing it right)
ISOL function of my HP-48GX returns Y=Sqr(r^2-(x-h)^2)+k in under 1.7 seconds

It really surprised me to see the HP beat the TI-89 so badly. Maybe its just graphic operations that are so slow. For example the TI-89 displays the MODE menu in 0.5 seconds. The HP-48gx takes over 3.5. It takes even longer for the HP to display the Memory menu while the TI-89 displays the Var-Link screen in about 0.6 seconds.

I upgraded my TI-89 from AMS 1.05 to AMS 2.05 and hated it. I emailed ti-cares and they emailed me another AMS 1.05 ROM. If that doesnt work I have a WinZip program I can send you that unzips TIB-Installer, the 1.05 TIB and starts the transfer to your calc.

To perform the actual Solve operation my Casio AFX 2.0 with ROM version 1.01 takes about 2.5 seconds. We cant compare this directly to the other 2 because you have to split the equation up, do the solve equation on one part then substitute the other half back in the final answer. Anyways, whenever you do that you get
Y=K-Sqr(4(X^2+H^2-2HK+K^2-R^2)+4K^2)/2 or Y=K+Sqr(-4(X^2+H^2-2HK+K^2-R^2)+4K^2)/2

I got following results:
HW2 TI-89 AMS 2.05(old batteries) = 3.4 secs

Yeah, HP's OS is better written than TI's hence HP beats TI even on its processor with speed on only 1/4 of TI-89. If done in assembly or C this solve functions would execute much faster. Tomorrow I'll get a new set of batteries and test this again.

Btw, its very strange to see your 89 get more than 4 secs on that. Your batts must be very old. I've noticed TI calc's performance degrade dramaticaly as batteries get low.
Oh, please send us a copy of your old AMS versions you got. Anything below 2.03 would be very nice to have here. Thanks.

I know we havent done too much with this yet but I will have to put the Casio speed tests on hold since I seem to have fryed one of the display lines. Its like one of the lines is completly off. Its the same color as the LCD when it is turned off. Nothing drawn to that line is shown. If any of you know what to do short of calling Casio, please tell me.

first of all, what did you do before this happened? i've seen a few peeps with TI that had same problem and removing batteries to reset the calc usually helped. if not, its possible that your calc has a defect that you managed to uncover before warranty ran out. anyway, give us some info, maybe some ideas will show up.

For some reason I dont understand the AFX 2 downloads a bunch of crap, the whole memory image I assume, then uploads everything back. It takes just as long to upload a 1k file as it does the whole memory of 768k. This makes me think it DLs the memory, alters it and reuploads everything. Anyhow, during the process in which it downloads from the calc to the PC cancel is available but when it begins to upload to the calc cancel is disabled and it says clearly not to break the connection. This makes since if it is in the middle of recontructing your memory. The other day it went through tranfering from the calc to the PC fine. It takes a few minutes so I got on AOL while it was doing this. When it got through tranfering to the PC AOL froze. When I ctrl+alt+del and ended AOL the Casio communication software gave me a communication error. At this time it showed tranfer from PC to calc at 0%. When I looked on my calc it said communication error and the line was missing. I tryed reseting it from the system menu on the calculator, reseting it by accessing a secret system menu, pressing the 'P' button on the back fo the calc, and taking the batteries out for 8 hours. It is still there. The only thing that shows up on that line is the border of display messages. These are the casio equivalent of 'Text' commands in TI-Basic. It doesnt show the text or background, just the border.

Ouch, this is kinda gay. It reminds me of my GBA Game Shark cartridge which does the same thing. It send all memory to PC and then PC sends and updated copy to the GS cart. Yeah, Ctrl_Alt_Del halts current processes (at least on older windows systems, not XP/2k) and therefore craps any running progs. I never use my comp while uploading an OS or even burning CD's for instance, just as a precaution. Well man, sorry to hear that. I'd call Casio right away and ask them to replace the calc. It doesn't seem to be your fault but their stupidness. Btw, if you call them and they respond i'd really like to know the outcome. GL!

Casio took quite some time to get my calculator back. It didn't take the 17 months it has been since my last post but it took a while. I sent the calculator in and they replaced it for $46. I think that is as cheap as you could get one on eBay. They sent me one with a ROM version earlier than the one I sent in so I sent it back in for a replacement. I suppose they misunderstood because they sent me a plus model as a replacement. Anyway, I have talked to Barrett a little on IRC these past few days and I remembered this project. Are you still interested in continuing?
