For those who have missed calcnews.net, or have never heard of it, at this point, it is officially dead. Due to lack of interest both on my part as well as visitors, I have (for now at least) closed down the site. Sorry for anyone who liked it back in the old days, unless someone wants to help me work on it, or enough people encourage me to keep working and start the site up again (from scratch), it will remain frozen. Thanks for 2 years and 256 news posts. For a time we averaged a news post a day. Goodbye, and thanks.

Yeah, sorry to hear that shard. It seems that TI community keeps narrowing down to a few select sites in USA and France... I liked your site though, perhaps you guys should just switch over to tinews.net and post your articles there? I'm sure tinews wouldn't mind a few extra guys and you'll actually get your articles noticed. If not TI our site wouldn't be where it is now. Their support gave us that much needed jumpstart or else we could have ended up where many other smaller TI sites unfortunalely end up.

I do hope you guys will stick around though.

That is a shame. Personally that site was the best aethitically and combined with the former TINews.net I never missed a thing. I wish others visited the site more often so you'd keep it open.

I might find a way to actually keep it open, however it would be much different than before. Hopefully my plan will work, and you will see a new, lighter CalcNews.net open in the near future.

Ok....I cooked up a little something. It currently blatantly copies the ti-news.net style, and even uses some of their RSS feeds (in the next couple days it will grab news manually). My goal is to make it more robust and fancy, as well as make it archive news so it can be viewed much later in the future. How do you like it so far?

Looks nice. Only thing I'd suggest is using different color on every other news field to make them easier to read. I think it'd a good idea that you've decided to only focus on news rather then everything, that way it'll be easier for you to maintain and usually have better quality. Keep working on it, don't drop the project because of low visits.

I actually was going to close it mostly because it took too much effort, and visits dropped when I pretty much stopped updating it. Now it runs itself, but steals too much from ti-news.net. It is still very much in alpha, including the design. That means it will be much easier to read later on. I also need to yell at ticalc.org to fix their dang RSS feed. It's so screwed up.

Oh, and also, using the bottom links, check out CalcNews.net GNU GPL Project. It's an initiative I am starting to get people to GPL their calculator code. It's at http://gpl.calcnews.net . You guys think you would be interested in pushing that initiative too? (And yes, I know I need to add more info to that page...its a very early version).

EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot to mention. It also agregates the news like ti-news.net does, but with 2 very distinct differences. 1) It lists them all on one page, by date of post, instead of seperated into pages by their parent site, and 2) It does (will?) archive news forever, meaning it creates a searchable database of every news item ever posted on all these websites. Very useful if you ask me, just like the original tinews.net archived everything. It even has search :D

Yeah, I know about lack of time... I think you should still keep the project, even only because it's got education value in a form of learning/improving your programming skills. Automatic RSS grabber is a nice idea to keep stuff update w/t updatng it.

I like the GNU GPL idea, how you suggest we should push the initiative? I and the rest of the crew I'm sure will be glad to promote the idea.

Btw, its good that it archives them (and search function is definitely a must for any archive). Sometimes it fun to go back to old news and read throught the good 'ol stuff. I sometime go look on our old news page. It's quite long now and sometime I even surprise myself by what we had posted there. :)

Cool, glad you like the auto-archiving. I might work on a few more features today, although what will be the hardest is getting the system of archiving to be nice and browsable. I don't want a silly way like the old tinews.net which just listed pages and pages. As a matter of fact that is what it does right now.

And also, I was thinking it would be smart to just advertise the idea or GNU GPL on calcs, and maybe add a sourceforge style "license" section of your file submit forms...if we could get ticalc.org to add that field too, it woudl really increase awareness about the legal powers of GNU GPL. Remeber those CDs that were sold on eBay ahwile back which just had archives of ticalc.org projects? Wiht GNU GPL people would have been able to use FSF to sue them, absolutely free. That is conveniece :D

Yeah, the idea of having the GPL link on upload page or near upload link (well, just like you said above) sound good to me.

Cool...also, made the page much nicer...still needs to be made to look better, but now you can sort (and search) by a specific site if you so choose. Took a little while to integrate it, and it sitll has a few bugs, but other wise is quite nice, if I must say so myself.
