I am posting this here as well as sending it to the administrators of ticalc.org becasue lets face it, a lot of the stuff sent to them will never see the light of day.

Dear Staff,

I know my time with this staff was kind of rough but I hope that wouldn't play a factor on any future ideas or involvement. I have an idea that never came to me when I worked there that I thought I would give you guys to at least discuss about. I know you're busy interviewing for the opening positions so feel free to put it aside until you are done with that.

There are many, many new great programmers popping up all over the place and it is quite clear that some of them still lake the attention they deserve. Currently there is a top downloaded author list of all time, which for the most part hasn't changed in a long long time. ticalc.org has been around so long that for a new face to make it on that list (and lets face it be recognized for their great work) would takes years to happen.

Would there be any interest in creating a top downloaded author list from the past 6 months or year? It doesn't even need to be updated daily as the others are, but weekly or monthly. The whole point of it would be to get the fresh new names of the great calculator programmers of the current time out in the open.

If that is not a good method, feel free to change at will, but any way of getting the names of the current great programmers out would be very cool to see.

Good suggestion M, although I doubt the admins of ticalc.org will ever see it like you said.

I like this idea, I think a lot of new programmers want to be able to be tangibly recognized. But, to be fair, even if we did this, programs like VTI and TIGCC would still dominate the downloads and this list would mirror the weekly downloads, which last time I checked had the TIGCC crew and Rusty Wagner up at the top. How about a top programs, and top new authors list, where only programs submitted in the past 6 months would be rated against each other, or only accounts created in the past 6 months or a year.

I like the idea too but ticalc doesn't implement changes very often so I'm not sure if they ever will get to this one. Though, they did add file rating system some time after we've added it here and it went nicely. It's definitely worth to at least suggest this idea to them and what ever happens them is up to them.

That is pretty much how it goes. There have been several ideas that have been discussed even during my short time there. Right before I left they agreed upon a small one (which is pretty cool) but unfortunately it hasn't shown up yet. Sadly I am still bound to not mention that stuff.

Anyway, you are right if they did agree to something, it would take some time to implement as well. mha really needs a sidekick to do his job, poor guy.

Here at CG, I bet Super Mario 2.0 will be the top d/l per day program for at least a year...and thats unfair to all the programmers who's games/programs are equally as good...but not recognized as "good" by the regualar crowd of people who just want games.

Korkow, that is also true on ticalc.

A very old suggestion of mine that would be sweet here: Program of the Week/Month/Whatever. It could get a nice news article, maybe a little message in the description... The guys in charge of news could do that. *cough Andy cough*

I was thinking about that too...but we would have to come up with a new name instead of POTY (or POTM) I have a good one instead of POTY.....TOILET! :lmao_a:

Anyways, we would probably do Program of the month rather than year...because it would drag on WAY to long for CG.

5 a month? wow... if people uploaded half the junk they made, Calcgames would be spending thousands of dollars a day on hosting... i mean honestly...

Well, it doesn't have to be released in that week. Just any one particular program.

no, cuz if it was just a program, once again, the leaders would be popular games like mario that have been around forever... maybe if it was from the past 2 months and led that particular week...

Well, we can be more conservative and have a program choice every 3 months. Btw, we get more than 5 ups a months but obviously not nearly as many as ticalc. Though, ticalc has their own servers and a fat pipe which we don't have and not likely can afford. Right now our ads are the only thing that keeps us online as we currently pay almost $400/yr for hosting. That does include our other services like IMpoll and IMcommunity as well as our hosted sites...
Generally speaking, I think having something like POTM would be nice. Besides, it doesn't need to be hosted here, why can't we have a POTM which is from another website or something like that? I thought all that matters is that a good prog/author get recognition they deserve wasn't that the whole idea behind POTM?

Something else that maybe should happen, and this is mainly for the new news staff, is to choose one random TI site per month, and write about it. Help shed some light on some of the smaller TI sites out there.

If you pick one program of the month, It's likely to be an assembly program. What about the little people. The basic programers. Some of them produce good games. Not saying I do cause the last ones I released are fairly simple to make, just takes some thought and creativity...But there should be an Assembly game of the month, Basic game, Flash game...but they don't get too much of those...

who said it would be ASM? the idea is to honor what is good... so if it means ignoring the "guess my number" programs... what does get picked will be even better...

personally, i've uploaded a couple files... even though only one shows up in the Archives... TIM83 is there... TIM84 is better, but not in the Archives... Gotta go to Ticalc... (wow... that was way off topic)

anyway... i dont know if splitting it into categories would help much, but maybe a top 3 of the month, where at least one Basic and one Asm would be represented...

I was thinkin more of 3 Basic programers, 3 Asembly, that way it shows more...but i dunno, that's just me...I just think that mayb if you included more than just 1 a month, it'd give those small authors more credit for their games.

well, the way i see it, if a small author deserves credit, they will get it.

maybe it should be something you are nominated for... each program gets one nomination for each 9 or 10 vote it gets... the more nominations, the more likely you will show up on the top 3 list...

Yea but then what if people don't pay attention to certain programs. Look at all those new programs out there. No one bothers to take a look at them. Or they don't bother trying it out atleast. Such as the Black Jack game, not that i'm trying to put focus on me, but no one takes the time to look at it. Or they don't bother lookin at basic games.

i dunno... i got 11 *whole* downloads in under a week... and two ratings... one was a "9" and the other was a "10" (simple math... the average is 9.5, and there have been two votes)

Also, I noticed if you have some catchy names you get noticed a bit more. I mean, look at Age of Darkness in the 83+ section, it has quite a few downloads for being a basic game. but the name itself sounds intriguing, so people download it to see what it is exactly. Final Fantasy is another, but if you don't make a decent game of it, you get flamed pretty badly.

The monthly update letter is auto-posted by the server, I believe, so unless someone did some script manipulation, you'd have to post it separately or eedit the monthly update post.
