Yeah, a good amount of people know about it already. I just thought there should be an actual discussion on it, though. For those who don't know, the Ti-NSpire is the next graphing calculator to be made, and almost undoubtedly the best one by far. If you don't believe me, here's enough about it to make a good number of people crap in their pants. What's more is that it's meant to be used for pre-algebra through calculus (I think), making it possibly the first 68k calculator to be allowed with the SAT.

There's a lot more about it in that link, too. The future looks bright…

320x240?
20MB?

Anyone know how many shades of grayscale this thing has?

My only dislike about this calculator is it's extremely non-game friendly layout :(

Well, keep in mind a lot of people have said things like that about a lot of consoles, and they managed. Besides, it is a calculator, not a gaming platform.

When it's 6 times the speed of an 89 Titanium, it'll definitely have amazing games for it.

Alien: If you meant the kinda-crowded screen layout, assembly programs take full control of the whole thing, not just one section.

The website says pricing should be similar to that of the Ti-89 Titanium.

cool. i'll buy one take it apart, and see if i can reassemble.

lets see how fast it takes for games to come out for this one. what language do you think it will use for BASIC?

Generally, BASIC is used as BASIC, just like C is used for C. But I do what you mean, and looking at it, it will probably still have BASIC support (possible some type of emulator?), but the main language will probably be whatever the 89/89T uses (C?).

Yes, I meant the key layout, with the directional buttons in the middle instead of on one side.

So does anyone know how many shades of grayscale it has?

I see like 5 in the screenshots, if you count black and white. Remember that grayscale hasn't been built in before now. So, if it is indeed built in, tons-o-levels-o-grayscale could accomplished manually.

Ya know why I like the key layout? You can hold it sideways to play games .

you can do that with a ti84 or 89, you just have to change the language. i was actually thinking about making a game that was sideways. freaky.

Is it confirmed that it's a 68k calc? I heard a while back that they were going to put a weaker ARM processor in it, but I guess it was a false rumor then.

Also, if it's so powerful, couldn't people just program in the functions that are banned from SAT and standardized tests?

It's strange……Not long ago, I distinctly remember reading about it having a 68k processor, but now I can't find it anywhere.

That's amazing! And... ... ... ... I still have my recipiete for my 89t, if it's even within $50 I'll have it, oh and I think thats an okay layout, it looks like an old paddle controller for like atari. If I'm the first one on CG with on of those, I will freak out so bad.

I thought the 89 had grayscale

I still don't like the centered arrow keys :(

Nah. Grayscale was possible to simulate, but there's no way keep it shaded halfway (aren't the pixels' on/off state stored as boolean?).

If you hate the arrow keys so much, it would be interesting to experiment with other stuff. Like, maybe the two left-side-topmost keys could be up and down, and something else could be side to side……?

The pixels are stored as bits in memory. One byte is 8 pixels. If in the group of 8 pixels, only the farthest right one is on, then the byte is 1 (00000001b). If the 2nd from the right is on, the number is 2 (00000010b). The 89 switches quickly between on and off to do grayscale.

It'll take up a chunk of the memory on the Nspire…

Ryantmer's probably gonna have the best shot at getting it first, seeing how he lives in Canada.

Algebra is included as one of the classes it's supposed to be for.

Titanium-like pricing, as said earlier in the topic.

would built in greyscale mean that the calc has built in memory mapped areas that are being flipped for visibility on the screen?

Either that or it would store them in a way that indicates to the LCD driver to give each pixel a certain amount of voltage. That's how gameboys do it.

Well, the people at 1-800-TI-CARES won't say anything about it. All they would tell me was that information would be on their website (wow, who knew?). The annoying thing about it all is that the website referred users to the telephone number for purchasing info…

The website has changed a bit, though. Instead of "Fall of 2006", it now says it will be available in 2007 (still only to select Canadian dealers). I can't find any other updates.

Ok, here's what I've gathered from ti-nspire.com:
•Everything in the Nspire family definitely has built-in grayscale (a first)
•The calcs will be exceedingly fast.
•The Nspire should be able to be used on all tests open to an 84+SE
•The CAS (Computer Algebra System) won't be allowed for as many things.
•They've said absolutely nothing about programming.
•TI's even worse with Flash than I previously thought. :D
•The Nspire and CAS will probably be compatible with all games made for them.
•The Nspire's keypad is interchangeable with one from the 83+/84 family. Supposedly, the Nspire operates as a TI-84+ (why not a SE?) in most all ways when the 84+ keypad is in.

I'm a bit skeptical about the 84+ mode. Even if TI is able to get assembly things to run (possible address issues), would they really artificially slow it down? Simulated grayscale might not work well in 84+ mode, either. It's not too likely that the full extent of an 84+'s memory will be there.

Also, TI's made a really bad decision with trying to sell a computer version of the Nspire. I mean, won't they release a free SDK anyway? Even if they don't, emulators will come.

I'm sure someone will eventually release a better version of the 84+ mode and make TI hang their heads in shame.

I wonder if it's an emulation or if it partially runs from the keypad. I hope it's the second one, since that would allow for all the other calcs (besides the 92, 92+, or Voyage 200) to run on the Nspire. That would be pretty bad if it just automatically switched, though; it would allow for no improvements by the TI community...

Did you see how big the pixels were on the 84+ during the demo? I couldn't really tell.

As of today, though, I do own an 84+SE, and a TI-81. Bwhahaha. That makes...

*tifreak8x counts on his fingers, takes off his shoes and continues counting...

18 calcs :P

One of them will be used for the next TIFW contest though, so I only have 17...

Are you missing anything besides a Voyage 200?

If I ever get an Nspire, it'll be after I sell my 89 and extra 83+. After I finish Pitfall!, I don't think I'll start (or finish) any other BASIC projects. Instead, I'll prepare for making big things on the Nspire when it comes out.
