pollpo Probe Posted: 10 Nov 2001 14:01 GMT Total Posts: Edit | Well... Windows takes the cake only because every computer had it, but Linux over-all is more stable. Instead of bombing out the entire operating system, it just bombs out the window. The only disadvantages are you have to setup your computer when you first install Linux (but you never have to do it again, unlike windows) and that there arn't enough compatable programs out for Linux yet. They should create something that makes all Windows programs be able to opperate of Linux, then it will boost the growth alot. (especially because Linux us free) |
Sauron Probe Posted: 13 Nov 2001 16:01 GMT Total Posts: Edit | Linux by far is the better one. Granted there are more programs written for the OS but, I have never, ever understood why explorer.exe *randomly* crashes and tears down the rest of the OS with it.
Now, I don't know if Win XP is more stable or not. They claim to have not used any of the Win 4 (95,98,Me) code and it has a NTFS instead of FAT32 (which has problems of its own).

Drantin Marine Posted: 13 Nov 2001 17:50 GMT Total Posts: 19 | hey pollpo heard of WINE? it's supposed to work pretty good but I haven't tried it yet. Main reason I haven't tried it is because I'm using WinXP WinXP is pretty stable but for some reason the other day it decided to vlock access to my download folder and kept giving me access denied errors :P Same thing happened to my friends desktop when he upgraded to WinXP :P (I got the problem fixed by the way) The only linux i've tried so far is TurboLinux(c) which was no good... It crashed more for me than WinME! also WinXP is more an upgrade from windows 2000 than anything else so there are TONS of DOS games that no longer work even in the famed "compatibility" mode which I still haven't gotten to work on Red Alert |

Posted: 13 Nov 2001 18:26 GMT Total Posts: 2486 | My Win ME is quite stable and I don't feel the need for upgrading to XP. I also don't want to waste my money on XP, cuz it's much more expensive than other versions of Windows. Most of the crashes on my comp are from the 3rd party software I'm using. It's hard to believe that MS didn't use any part of Win 95, 98, ME in it's XP cuz this would be a major rewrite which such a large company as MS would try to avoid. Concerning the DOS programs, the DOS emulator isn't very good and it doesn't do a good job with sound either. I heard that there was some other, not MS emulator but haven't seen it yet. Maybe it's time for us to move away from DOS programs...

madPenguin Probe Posted: 14 Nov 2001 14:39 GMT Total Posts: Edit | hey barrett..
Windows is not better than Linux because everyone has it and most companies develop for it. That would be Windows being more convenient for the average user, not better. Seeing that many people dont know a whole lot about how their computer works, Windows (especially XP) is great for many people-it's a very user friendly, computer illiterate orientated OS. Linux is user friendly, but in a different way. It's not for the average user because it *can be* difficult to set up, difficult to learn, and difficult to use.
In terms of the actual OS, Linux is better. When something in windows crashes, generally it pulls down the rest of windows with it. Linux wont. Linux can stay up for years, which is why most webservers are powered by Linux. Windows 9x/ME can stay up for about 3 days if you're lucky. NT/2000/XP can stay up longer, but they are more expensive. Linux is free. I downloaded RedHat 7.1 without paying anything but download time. Linux is also open source, widely used, and is just as visually-appealing as Windows.
...Linux is better |
pollpo Probe Posted: 15 Nov 2001 07:24 GMT Total Posts: Edit | Well... It seems that my last posted message never made it... Oh well. On the note of WINE, if you want to download it or take a look at it, goto http://www.winehq.com/download.shtml . My other comment was just about how horrible Windows ME is. (at least my experience with it) |

pollpo Probe Posted: 15 Nov 2001 15:50 GMT Total Posts: Edit | I explained it in the one that somehow was deleted, so I guess I'll explain it again. It has several bugs, and many can be obnoxious. For one, whenever you install anything onto your computer, it creates the empty files *oem.inf. If you don't know about them, their presence could make it impossible to update your computer (including DirectX and such (speking of which, the newest DirectX patch just came out)) I had over 30,000 of them before I deleted them! And it is truly more unstable. XP is supposed to be somewhat decent. Go online and take a look at alot of the other bugs for ME. I point this one out because I couldn't update DirectX for months to play these $50 games I just bought. |

MCConniffe Probe Posted: 24 Dec 2001 14:20 GMT Total Posts: Edit | well i've been using pcs for years ... i've used every version of windows from 1.06 to XP Pro which i currently use ... i recently got into using Linux/BSD/Solaris/SCO UNIX, and have gotten good enough at them to no longer call myself a newbie, though not quite the expert yet ... I CAN sya this ... they both have their place ... *nix and Windows ... i like the stability of *nix for servers and such, but for my desktop pc it just doesn't cut it ... first off, much of the software for it is relatively cheezy ... either is much more difficult to install/use than necessary (no im' not lazy ... i am just much too busy to spend hours doing a small task, when another solution could have it done in minutes) ... Also i like the way Windows manages resources better ... *nix seems to give all processes all resources when they need it ... so if im burning a cd and i open an mp3, the cd will lose a significant amount of resources, causing it to fail, while the mp3 program loads seconds faster ... in windows yes, it still does that but to much less of an extent ... *nix simply needs to enforce better task priority rules ... as far as which is better ... well that depends on what the person needs it for ... imho .. if your running a server, or you need raw power ... use *nix ... if you need desktop applications to run well, co-exist well, and all that ... use WindowsXP ... its far more stable, secure, and faster than any other version of windows i've ever used ... and now that ms hired some security experts (finally), security holes have been fixed relatively quickly...
Of course it's up to the individual user which they install ... but still neither is better than the other. They both have their bugs, they both have their problems. It's just a matter of which you prefer :) |

One thing that I now between the two is that there are like no viruses for Linux and a whole mess of them for Windows. What caught my interest was that the comment before mine was on my birthday...Too bad I didn't know that site was here back then. Oh, I'm not entirely sure but with WINE and WINEX (linux/unix version of DirectX 8) but you can run most Windows progs on Linux. |

Posted: 8 Nov 2002 18:52 GMT Total Posts: 2486 | well, WINE runs a lot of progs but not most. actually, most game won't work (actually, there's a list of supported soft on WINE's website). Linux is nice coz you can get it for nada while Windoze XP Pro is like $200. which is gay. and stupid Windoze XP Home has like no network feats and other needed stuff -> so you pay another $100 to get Pro.

Billy Ultralisk Posted: 18 Nov 2002 19:08 GMT Total Posts: 260 | I know what you mean about the viruses. I just got norton, because I havn't had updated virus software for 2 years, and I found 34 viruses on my pc! 5 of which are tojans from IRC! I use Win2K Pro. While XP Pro is MUCH better in networking, and slightly more stable, 2K pro is doing just great for me. Compatibility and programs are obviously abundant for Windows. Its user friendly for casual users, while also being complex in other areas. That's what makes windows so brilliant. It's made for just about everybody. I leave my PC on for months with no crashing at all. However, its not exactly perfect; Indeed, its far from it. Windows 98 and below tend to crash a whole lot. Windows 2K Pro tends to have memory problems. Which is that when you exit a game it doesn't dump the memory. This causes problems when your ram overflows (not in a melifluouse manner) and causes chaos and becomes very bane! lol "Well, now that we've lost 98% of our listeners, lets reward the remaining 2% with commercials" - Laslow, GTA3 |
