Alright so here is a funny story.
(Because the admins at my school search for this kind of stuff names of schools won't be relased in full.)

Some guy at Mt. V built this computer virus and put it on his flash drive. he then uploaded it on to his schools network. Truns out this single virus corupted files and completly made the entire school's districts network unuseable. In retrun NPHS has banned all falsh drives and will take them if they catch you using them. The funny part is that NPHS S: (Student Data Drive) is acsseable from home. Or so they say. The teachers haven't figured out that it doesn't work and is way unuser frendly. That means are teachers expect us to be able to work on research papers save them and then finish them at home. Witch is now no longer possible. So now every one is pertty much screwed over because of some guy that doesn't even go to our school.

My school had flash drives banned since they existed. Use a floppy, CD, or webserver.

yeah, I would find a webserver that would allow php, and install a simple upload script so you can upload your documents to it.

Or use a filesharing website, like http://www.sharebigfile.com/.

(DISCLAIMER: By filesharing, I mean you put a file on the Web for downloading later, not you link your computer to others and share files. I am not responsible from computer bad stuff arising from the use of the second definition, e.g. Limewire.)

Thanks 3fg and TIfreak.

By the way I already have my own space that aloows php and there is already an upload fourm. But the mention of webspace has reminded me about my moms old IUPUI oncoarse account that will allow file uploading. Because its a .edu the TI Guys won't block it.

@Zach: Yeah, well, if I hadn't tacked on the disclaimer there's always a chance you'd have hunted me down and sued me. Or someone else would have. Either way, I don't really care.

It's stupid consumers who believe the internet is out to get them that make me disappointed in humanity. In Arizona, a kid was arrested for having child porn. The police determined that his computer recieved them from a hacker. The family is trying to spread the message to only connect to the internet when you have to do something. That family is stupid, the kid downloaded the files himself and lied to cover it up. Leaving your computer connected to the internet has no ill effects unless you anger an experienced hacker or download lots of porn or cracked programs. Even then it's difficult to mess your computer up. I've been through the bowels of the internet and talked to the most disturbing people, and I've never gotten a virus or trojan. I installed known adware on my computer to test my anti-spyware program. The anti-spyware program failed. That was fun.

Moral of the story is: the internet cannot hurt your computer, only you can.

Actually, I'm paranoid that an experienced hacker might get ticked off and try to nuke my PC.

@3fg: I don't think that the internet is out to get me or any crazy stuff like that. And you are right about only you can screw up your comp. So I agree with ya.

@Banjo: Why would you be paranoid about that. The internet is a tool. It is only dangerous if you do not understand how to use it or how it works.

Funny Story :)

I was on my moms comp about three years ago (a little after I started teaching my self how a comp works and what exactly can it do and why.) Any way I needed a "Special" number. I went to this site with no fire wall and crappy virus protection. Well I got attacked by all this add ware and spy ware. Lucky my mom was at work so I spent the next three hours removing all the files one by one and discovering ways around them not letting me delete them. Right when my mom was pulling up I was restarting and finishing the last file. She never knew what I had done.

@Zach: I understand perfectly how the internet works (well, not perfectly; I don't know HTML) and I'm still paranoid about hackers. I mean, what else could your cryptic message mean?

That's why I have a router and firewall/antivirus/antispyware software, and the emergency backup of my computer not being directly connected to the Internet computer.

You can never be too careful. ^_^

Besides, your computer may be infected with a SpamBot and part of a spamgrid, and you'd never know.

I agree a router is a good precaution. If you have that you'd have to manually install the stuff on your computer to get it.

Actually, the best routers do not require you to install software on your computer, but rather just run the *automatic* "Found New Hardware" wizard. After that it's just check on it every few months to ensure it's working and forget about it.

This is the kind of router I have.

And besides, I have DSL, so my router is built-in to the connection.

Any router that requires you to install software on your computer is a piece of crap. I'm saying that once you have a router, the only way for you to get viruses and spyware is to install them yourself.

Not necessarily. If it piggybacks onto an email attachment to your email, it'll get through. If it's disguised as a beneficial part of a site that you're loading the data for into your Temporary Internet Files folder, it'll get through. There are millions of ways it can bypass the router.

Which is why a compound failsafe system is a good idea.

Edit: And, of course, the router's driver is technically software, so you're saying that all routers are crap.

@banjo:
Thats why you don't open emails that are fishy, or download stuff from a site that you are not familiar with. And If it does get threw your anti virus and you know its in your temp files you can delete and limit the spread of the virus by going threw a deleting all infected files. There are many ways to do this. So there is no reason why you need to be afraid of hackers and viruses. Personally If I notice that my comp is acting funny I just pull the plug. That has never happened to me.
Also you know perfectly well that 3fg is not talking about drivers. Anything and everything that you plug into your comp requires a driver. So don't try to turn things against people especially if you do not fully understand them.

I never installed software for my router. A router that connects to your computer via a wireless card or an ethernet cable communicates through TCP/IP and UDP. That's already built-in and requires no driver.
I use the gmail web portal to check my email and I never download attachments unless they're ones I was expecting. I also don't use an insecure browser, so not only does malicious code have a hard time even reaching my hard drive, it probably won't be run even if it did.
Believe me, security is the least of my concerns. I value performance over safety. Lucky for me the software that performs the best also happens to be quite safe.

@3fg: Yeah, that sounds like what I do. However, just to be safe, I add all the other stuff on top of it.

Besides, I only use freeware that is held widely throughout the online community to be good (e.g. ZoneAlarm, Avira AntiVirus, Spybot). So I don't pay for my protection, and it's still excellent.

@Zach: I was just shooting blanks. It should have been obvious I wasn't serious.
