Well, since B uses Adobe Premere (sp?) he can probably answer this, but I'll ask everyone here as well. What is your favorite video codec for watching anything. I'm going through a trial and error with some of the stuff I'm making because some have a great picture and gargantuan size, others have a repsectable size and moderate quality picture etc. The one codec I've found that provides the best picture and size ratio is Sorenson, but it takes a few freaking hours to encode 5 minutes! Does anyone have any codecs that I should try and use that they feel have a good picture/size ratio? I have to exclude Divix, I got some anomalies that were pretty apparent when I used it.

I've never had any problems with Divx (well, once i tried to encode in 16 bits). WMV sometimes looks good, but it's a bit of a pain since you have to use windows movie maker (i've seen some aweful artifacts in wmv tho). You could try several pass divx and see what it's like.

Well, when I turn my DVDs to movies on my PC I'll either use DIVX or XVID codecs. And for the audio, I use RA-MP3.

Remember S, I'm on a mac and wmv is OS proprietary. I'll go through the Divx settings again and see if I can get rid of the artifacts. These artifacts were not like crazy jpg conpression but systematic colors in an aranged pattern in random places on the image.

Here are the list of settings I'm going to use for my the Divx test I'll do right now
Quality: Standard
Multipass, nthpass 69$$ kbps Max bitrate
1024 kbps
Bitrate modulation: 0
Psychovisual enhancements: Fast

some people consider 1000 kbps low for divx though. 2000 and then 1000 might look better, but I haven't experimented much with n-th pass encoding (yet).

Thanks for your help S. iMovie crashes when using mutipass, nth pass. Multipass, 1st pass is fine. When I get everything organized I'll be uploading my site. I found a good compression and size with DivX for web format, 10.1MB for 5 min 13 sec vid with 32kHz, 112kbps sound.
