ASM is what is refered to as "machine code" the language is made up of commands that are of the lowest software level on the calculator which makes it so it is incredibly fast. BASIC is a tokonized langiage. You use extremely high level commands that are tokenized to speed things up (I'm not sure on the details) even though it is the slowest language supported on any calc. Those files you asked about, they pertain to Ion itself. If they are deleted Ion won't work. |

This process, plus the fact that the translation is not very efficient (I've looked at the source), makes Basic very slow. All your games in Ion, the ones with cool, fast graphics, are assembly. All your little games, like Nibbles or Race, are Basic. |

That's an oversimplified and misleading way of saying it. Basic is an interpreted language. TI-Basic is never compiled. http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/i/interpreter.html
Ion is an assembly shell used to run assembly programs. Ion is somewhat synonymous with assembly on the 83/83+ because it became very popular and many assembly games were tailored to it.
