korkow Ultralisk Posted: 19 Nov 2004 15:56 GMT Total Posts: 465 | This is strange. My friends 83+ can make lowercase letters by pressing alpha twice, but mine can't. HIs is about 2 months newer than mine though. Is there any way i could be able to do this. I have the latest OS and everything. |

More or less I just get pissed when some noob comes up and says that his 83+ SE is the greatest thing ever, andsoon after I find out that he hasn't even seen or usedan 86...I hate noobz. |

JcCorp Probe Posted: 29 Nov 2004 18:34 GMT Total Posts: Edit | lol. good point allyn. This site has a noob overload. I reallly don't mind all the n00bs, though... make me work my brain. ;)
And I never thought the 83+ was the greatest thing ever, even when I had never heard of other graphing calcs. I have a nice 89T, and it plays sweet games and does "everything but talk" (a quote from my math teacher who was in fact quite excited to see a decent calc in the class), but I don't think that's superb either cuz of complications and lack of really good mario clones. Really, there is no perfect calc. Sometimes I whip out my 83+ just cuz it's easier. I've tried a 85, and frankly, I'm not impressed. So i guess every calc has its benefits.
ps- what does that sig mean, allyn? |

Also, I believe the 83/84 series of calcs is the best buy for any high school student, for two reasons:
1) That's what everyone uses
2)Since everyone uses it, it's not hard to get games or "educational programs" :D |

Posted: 29 Nov 2004 20:03 GMT Total Posts: 1892 | Probably the most common complaint about the 68k series (and by extension the AMS), is that the interface is "un-natural," or "unintuitive." Which is tantamount to saying, "It's too hard to use." Which is, of course, completely bogus, the 85/86 and the 89/92/v200, although not as easy to use as the 83 series, are much more powerful in their abilities, but you have to take the time to learn how to use them. |
Morgan Ultralisk Posted: 29 Nov 2004 21:38 GMT Total Posts: 321 | This site may be full of noobz, but there are so many active member to answer their questions, thus I am fine with everything.
allyn, I don't think the 85/86 is any harder to use than the 82/83 series. There are very few differences in the OS. Yeah the very first time you use an 86, your like, "what the heck" but I did the same when I used an 83. The 68k do sooo much I would have to agree that they are rather difficult to use. |
Morgan Ultralisk Posted: 29 Nov 2004 21:44 GMT Total Posts: 321 | >> why do you like the 86 so much?
I recently met a girl who flat out told me tht she loved argueing! That seemed pretty intimidating at the time, but I have come to realize that I love argueing as well. And I know more about the 86 than anything else...so go figure :-D |
spiral Wraith Posted: 29 Nov 2004 23:43 GMT Total Posts: 958 | Having used both an 86 (albeit a rather brief time) and 89, there are some instances where the 86 is superior, like better greyscale rendering. However, grayscale (and this isn't even true grayscale) is so dated. In the majority of other capabilities the 89 is superior. |
Ray Kremer Ultralisk Posted: 1 Dec 2004 09:57 GMT Total Posts: 310 | I don't even take assembly whatnot into account when considering what calculators are better. Games are just icing, the math functionality and OS/interface design are the cake.
For instance, the menu system used by the 85/86 absolutely owns the menus of the other two model families. Of course once you need to have CAS, the 89 family really is the only (TI-made) option. |
Morgan Ultralisk Posted: 1 Dec 2004 13:36 GMT Total Posts: 321 | My God those words were like music to my ears!!
and spiral, Yes the 89 and all 68k calculators are superior to any z80. |
spiral Wraith Posted: 1 Dec 2004 19:08 GMT Total Posts: 958 | Maybe it takes some time to get use to, but I really hate pushing more on the 86. The 89 can be a bit annoying when you have to delve into menus, but I prefer it to pushing more (does it go in the other direction?) |
Morgan Ultralisk Posted: 1 Dec 2004 19:32 GMT Total Posts: 321 | I have never heard that one before. No "more" only goes one way. |

Posted: 2 Dec 2004 06:44 GMT Total Posts: 29 | I grew up on a 81 and a 92+ and later praised the 83+ as god even over the 84+/SE but i have to say that the interface on the 89 and 92's is far superior to that of the 86/83/84/82/81! *whew* it gives it more of a linspire/winspire feel (linspire and winspire are PC OS) plus the prog editor is just magnificent!

Ray Kremer Ultralisk Posted: 2 Dec 2004 09:17 GMT Total Posts: 310 | Pushing MORE is better than hitting the down arrow a whole bunch of times. Mostly I like the way the menu stays on the screen until you call up a different one or tell it to go away. Oftentimes if you're going to use something from a menu once, you're going to use it several times and it helps to already have it up and ready.
Actually the 89 family's interface is fairly good, but it looks so much like traditional PC GUIs that you start out wondering where the mouse is. |
