calcdude37 Probe Posted: 9 Jun 2005 14:27 GMT Total Posts: 1 | My friend and I are having an argument. He claims that his TI-86 is better than my TI-84+/SE. Which calculator is better? My 84, or his 86? |

JcCorp Probe Posted: 9 Jun 2005 16:08 GMT Total Posts: Edit | Both have strong points. 86 is harder to use, but it has more powerful z80. Also, the 84+ costs more, so you can brag about that. |

Im gonna have to go with 84+SE for 3 reasons 1) the archive (and lots of it!) 2) an insane amount of games 3) i have one :)

Ray Kremer Ultralisk Posted: 10 Jun 2005 11:39 GMT Total Posts: 310 | The only thing the 83 family really has going for it is that the current incarnations have Flash ROM which allows for archive, OS upgrades, and Flash Apps. I counter these by pointing out that half the 83+ Flash Apps are copied off the 86's built in abilities anyway, OS upgrades aren't critical if the existing OS works just fine, and though it's not as much storage as Archive gives, the 86 DOES have three times the RAM of the 83 family calculators. I know I was able to fit more than a handful of assembly games on there.
Of course there reaches the point were you can say "Screw 'em both and get an 89 family calculator." |

Andy Administrator Posted: 10 Jun 2005 13:02 GMT Total Posts: 939 | The 86 doesn't support the TI Keyboard, which it could if it would be able to take OS upgrades. Therefore, OS upgrades are a good thing to be able to do so you an add new features. |

korkow Ultralisk Posted: 10 Jun 2005 19:51 GMT Total Posts: 465 | TI-86 for a couple of reasons. First of all, I would say it is much easier to use. Also, it has a custom menu, does differential equations, can solve both algebraic equations AND simultaneos equations (What a lifesaver). Plus.. well, I don't have time to list everything! |

BullFrog Wraith Posted: 11 Jun 2005 16:51 GMT Total Posts: 623 | I think it's really a matter of personal preference.
Personally, I'm for the 86. The 84+/SE or whatever may have an archive that you cram full with all the programs on the Internet, but that doesn't do much for you when you take a test that requires you to reset all of your memory. (And for those who find a way to fake a memory reset, woohoo for you.) All those added features from the flash apps go bye-bye. The 86 features are built in so they're still there.
I have an 89, though, so I'm happy with that.
