I am sorry for posing this questioin, and yes, I am aware that a guide exists for connecting, but there is one thing I cannot seem to do correctly: I cannot put the USB cable in the correct port. What and where are the COM1 and COM3 ports? Help is much appreciated.

Those are serial ports. For the usb cable, just plug it anywhere that fits.

Hmm. Well, "anywhere that fits" does not seem to be working. I have about 18 USB ports on the back of my tower. about 11 are being used. When I plug the cable into any of those ports, TI Device Explorer does not detect any connections. Thanks for trying to help, though.

You should plug it in before opening any TI computer applications, that way the software can recognize it on startup. Also, I'm assuming you have installed the device drivers from the CD?

TI-Device Explorer is not a good way to go around it. The best idea is to plug in the calculator, wait until you hear the noise indicating that Windows recognizes it, right click the 8xp/8xk you want to send and select Send to TI Device. If the software is installed properly, this choice will be there. After that it's just a matter of clicking Send and hoping that TI-Connect doesn't suck.
