GNU/Linux Ported to Voyage 200 | Jayhawk |
I didn't want to answer some possible questions in the article, so I've decided instead to address them here.
First off all, the reason I haven't announced who's making the release is I was asked to hold off because of the Slashdotting that is likely to follow shortly after the release. The extra two or three days is to give the programmers a chance to arrange for better hosting which will be more likely to stand up to the Slashdot effect.
Concerning the potential of this being released for the TI-89 or TI-92 Plus, it's probably not going to happen. GNU/Linux pushes the (superior) hardware of the Voyage 200 to the limit already with the included utilities and a working kernel. Memory constraints are the biggest issue here, and that's why a port to other 68k calculators is out of the question.
Virtual memory is not supported on the calculator because of the speed limitations of writing to Flash ROM and concerns about Flash ROM having a limited number of writes before becoming unusable. During normal calculator operation, this does not happen. Swapping, on the other hand, would require a large number of writes to Flash ROM and is a cause for concern.
If you have any further questions, post them here and I will answer. I did receive a lengthy e-mail from the lead programmer providing me with much detail on the upcoming release, so I can certainly answer any questions you might have. |
