A Call for Help	Jayhawk
For those who don't know me, I've been active in the community since 1999. I've been an avid calculator enthusiast for quite awhile longer. I'm soon to be 21 years of age, and I've largely moved on from calculators. Those who visit the forums regularly have probably got a taste of what I'm doing now. Anyways, I've made the decision, after careful thinking, to retire from the community this summer. Instead of just walking away suddenly, however, I've decided to find someone to take over my responsibilities for CalcGames. I'm the news editor and newsletter editor, for those who aren't familiar with what I do here. So, we're hiring. If you're interested, you need to send an e-mail to redux@calcgames.org and inform me of your interest in this position. You need not be a recognized name in the community or even a regular to apply and receive serious consideration. The only qualifications are that you be dedicated, intelligent, literate, reasonably familiar with calculators, have professionalism, and behave in an ethical way. Those are requirements and will not be compromised. If you are selected for the job, you'll work with me for the next few months before I hand over the reins and walk away from the community. On a side note, the most prominent calculator sites are staffed almost entirely by American males. This isn't representative of the community by any means. As a calculator site, our goal is to serve the entire community, not just a fraction of it. If you are female or non-American, please do apply. This is not affirmative action, just a hope that a diverse set of applicants will put their names up for consideration. Note, also, that the job will only go to a candidate that meets all of the above qualifications. There is no guarantee that the position will be filled if no suitable applicant is found. Re: A Call for Help allynfolksjr It's a shame to see you leave, but I realize that as we specialize in our education and life in general that maybe we don't have the time anymore to dedicate to the community. Re: A Call for Help Jayhawk I'll be around for a few months. That's the good news. I'm not leaving immediately. The plan is to find a worthy candidate to take over the job and slowly hand things over during that time. And if I don't get the feeling the job is in good hands, it won't be handed over. Re: A Call for Help Jayhawk Kind of an update before I get to work... I've got a paper due tomorrow. Well, it's a draft of a paper. So I'm going to spend a bit of time this evening finishing up on it. Once that's done, I'm going to reply to the people who've already applied to me. I'm very serious about the hiring process, so I don't expect to announce a decision publicly for a few weeks. This means there's time to apply, but I don't have a set deadline, so you should apply sooner rather than later. Also, even if you're not interested, but you know someone who might be a good fit, encourage that person to apply. I will be taking the time to review each candidate and everyone is guaranteed a response from me. For those who don't know, there's a lot to being a news editor or a file archiver. Being a news editor is more than just visiting ticalc.org and ti-news.net to look for things already posted elsewhere. I know I wasn't a good news editor when I started a long time ago. So, I'm not announcing my decision publicly until after it's been made, so I can work with the person I hire and not have the criticism of the community. :) Anyways, I'll be answering my e-mails after I finish the draft and eat dinner, so if you want a response tonight, go apply now. :) 27 Jan 2005, 15:55 GMT

A Note for Applicants Jayhawk I thought this would've gone without saying, but the letter you write me tells me a lot about whether you'd be a viable candidate for the job. People who write me one or two sentences with poor spelling and grammar are telling me they're not up for the job. People who take the time to write a good letter explaining who they are, their experience in the community, and why they're interested in the job are earning more serious consideration for the job. Consider this before you write your e-mail to me. Again, I would've expected this would be obvious, but apparently it isn't. While I've not eliminated anyone from consideration just on those grounds, it does weigh heavily against you if you write a sloppy letter to me. On a side note, I've been very much tied up with things not relating to calculators. There will be a news update going up tonight, and a "column" posted tonight or tomorrow. Re: A Call for Help Jayhawk One more update for the weekend: I'm slightly behind because of an evil thing known as differential equations homework. If you don't know what this is, don't ask. You're better off in blissful ignorance. ;-) That being said, there seems to be a LOT of speculation going around about the position and who the main competitors are for the job. Considering that I'm still accepting applicants and have no plans to stop any time soon, it is extremely premature to speculate on who the best candidates are for the job. I've interviewed a total of two people in real-time and corresponded with a few more by e-mail. I've read all the e-mails that I've received this weekend but haven't even had a chance to respond to them, let alone actually interview people. In other words, there's no way to possibly make an accurate speculation about who is a contender for the job or who the front runners are. I will interview all serious candidates for the job. Only then will I decide on who is a contender and who are the best choices. Remember, I don't have a timetable in doing this. I've got other commitments, many of which are more important than a website. Differential equations homework is one of those commitments. My work in research at school is another. After all, it's things like that which have prompted me to do this hiring now. So, I can't say when I'll even have a decision, let alone when I'll announce such things publicly. I'm also waiting for more applicants. I'd like a large and diverse pool of applicants so I can make a good choice. It's not to say that choice hasn't already applied; maybe it has, maybe it hasn't. But I'll make that decision once all the applications are in, and not before. Also remember that I'm not necessarily interested in the most qualified candidate. I'm not necessarily interested in the most experienced candidate. I'm interested in someone who can take over and I trust to continue my work in a way that's acceptable to me. I've said this from the beginning. In other words, there's absolutely no reason to speculate about anything at this point. Hopefully that clears up some confusion. 30 Jan 2005, 19:34 GMT
