Ok. So, I have decided to start swiching over to linux. I heard that Ubuntu was the best(or one of the best) so I decided that I would go with it. I just downloaded the program "ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso" from http://www.ubuntu.com/. I then burnt it to disk using InfraDisk. I put it in my commputer and rebooted. I got the Ubuntu welcome screen and started to install Ubuntu. In the part where you choose how much memory you want to give to Ubuntu and how much to XP I can't drag the line any smaller to give more memory to Ubuntu. Does this meen that I need a better computer to run both side by side? Is there a better Linux out there that I should use? Should I go all Linux insetead of duel booting? I have never ventured far out from windows so I have no knowlage of much in Linux.

Thanks,
Zarg

Edit:
I loaded Ubuntu onto my computer and installed it. Everything when fine. As I turn on my computer Ubuntu loads up. I login and it freezes up and sends me back to the login screen. I can get in in the fail safe GEONE mode but only that. How do I fix this problem?

Ok. I figured out how to login to Ubuntu. I had to change some Xorg files and my background color?? Don't know why but it worked. I was wondering if there is a place where I can learn the basics of using Ubuntu. Also, I thought linux was text based. Why isn't Ubuntu and can it be changed to text based? Thanks.

OK first of all, Ubuntu is a distribution of Linux. The best way to learn how to use Linux is just buy Googleing the things you are have problems with. You will find that there is an answer to just about every question. As far as being text based, Linux does have a GUI and it can be turned off. Try pressing Alt + Ctrl + F1. That will bring you to one of your other desktops, with out a GUI. There is so many different things that you can do on a Linux box that you can't do on a windows. So have fun and learn a lot of cool stuff.

Awsome. Thanks. Do you know of any websites that list some basic commands in the linux that I'm trying to use. Would you recomend using text based or GUI. Also I love to learn how to do cool stuff, like remotly shuting down a commputer on windows. Is there any of that type of stuff on ubuntu?

No, not at all.
It's not linux is unix-like or anything. Or designed to work on headless servers.

Are you still looking for some good Linux command tutorials? I have some stuff that might be helpful.

Isn't Directx a microsoft thing? Would Linux be able to use the Directx functionality?

Nope, not DirectX. It is probably a vedio driver issue. ATI cards are known to have some issues.

Ok. I can drop to the shell by pressing Ctr + Alt + F1 on the login screen. From there I can login fine then cd /etc/X11 then sudo startX. After that I can get into a account but can't do much. I can also login to the failsafe. I have tryed sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. But that hasn't fixed my problem either....

I have no idea how good you are at working with Linux, so some of this stuff might be pretty basic for you.
