Yesterday I bought a nice shiny new computer. It came pre-installed with windows XP. Unfortunetly, I want to install Ubuntu on it. I downloaded it onto a memory key/flash drive, inserted it, and turned the computer on. I also tried a cd. Any help?

Later I did come across this page.
Any idea which one would be best given that I have a Intel duo core?

Yeah the same thing happens with the disk. Maybe the cd writing software it to old, or the computer can't read what ever format it was written in.

I'm assuming that you downloaded an ISO.

Use ISO burning software to burn it to a DVD.

Then stick the DVD in the DVD drive and if it doesn't boot to the DVD by default, restart the computer and read the screen for anything that says "press this key to enter boot menu"... press that key.

Once it boots to the DVD it will tell you exactly what to do.

Looks like you need burnCDCC. Best ISO burner I've come across, as it is really simple, i.e. all it can do is burn bootable ISOs.

That burnCDCC worked like a charm. Thank you so much. I now have Ubuntu up and running.
How much of a risk is there of getting a virus if I hook up to the internet? Are there even any viruses for Ubuntu?

chances are that you won't get a virus.

I would also imagine that Ubuntu has a firewall turned on by default.

I have had Ubuntu for... 14 months or so? Never had a virus, nor do I have antivirus protection.
