I have trouble with these: ^ means to the power of

6x^3+17x^2y-26xy^2+8y^3 divided by x+4y

when x^4-3x^3-kx^2+5x-2 is divided by x-3, the remainder is -5. Find the value of k.

Hopefully, you know what synthetic substitution is. I find that the easiest way tot do this is to set up a synthetic substution chart and put -5 in as the remainder value and 3 in as your top left value. Then work backwards(subtract 8 from -5 then divide by 3, etc.).
