its the type of programming most widely used when it comes to professional game making and program building.

Which compiler would you recommend using? Windows has one called Visual C++, is it any good?

If you have the most updated one. (I have Visual C++ 6, which supposedly leaves some features to be desired.) As an alternative, a lot of people use Dev C++.

i realize this is a bump and i apologize in advance.
but,
dev C++ is pretty cool, but alot of times i know there isnt a mistake, but it finds thing on it that it thinks are mistakes. and it may just be me and my limited coding ability, but sometimes the compiler is glitchy.
or maybe its just my old copy.
maybe.
but visual is too flashy for me. i like those down-home programs that dont take a year to start up. id prefer dev C++ if itd work better for me.

The visual c++ 2008 express isn't bad. My favorite free IDE has got to be code blocks though, it is not quite as powerful as vc express but much better than dev-c++

I second Xphonix's Dev C++ choice. It's my favorite compiler.

well I now use Dev C++ on windows and the gcc one on Ubuntu. gcc isn't really a IDE, but I don't really use one of those. I guess my programs aren't complicated enough yet.
I agree with Hydralisk, flashy = bad sometimes. I once saw a loading bar on an operating system that sent flashing pulses along its length. I think they made it so that ADD kids would have something to stare at.

but it also wastes precious processing time showing off the loading bar, when it could be unpacking faster.
wut a waste.
