Do not buy gas on May 15. If the nation stands together and starves OPEC for one day, then they will get the idea. Keep in mind the last time this hapend gas prices fell .30 the next day. The bigger the out come the bigger the reward.

well... I'm not saying that this wouldn't work... but it really shouldn't work. We're all going to get gas either the day before or the day after (or two or three days), and this "strike" doesn't have anything to do with using gas. If opec was smart, they wouldn't budge, because they know that nothing is changing... just 1 bad day.

I'll deliberately buy gas just to lessen the effect.

My non-gas-buying-ness will have no effect either; I don't have a car.

The only way to make a truly significant impact on them is to stop using gas for a minimum of 2 weeks, but you will not find enough people to do that...

Keep in mind the following though:

If people would slow down, their cars would use less gas (IE Dont go 80, do 60)

If more people would car pool, less gas would be needed

If more people walked the few blocks to get to their destination instead of driving their car because they are too lazy, gas prices would drop...

@tifreak: There is just one problem with your argument: When you go faster, your engine needs LESS fuel, not more, to fly. Cases in point: A jumbo jet uses more fuel at takeoff speeds than it does at cruise speeds. And, of course, city mileage is always worse than highway mileage, albeit combining faster-speed gas-saving with lack of start-stop gas wasteage..

Hey I'm just the messenger on this one. And I agree with you all. with the exception of bajo's last post.

@banjo get a car and go fast around I-465. See how much gas you use. Then fill up and go the speed limit. Faster = More fule
When your car's transmision goes into overdrive at 60 the tactometer is about 2000 RPMs. At 80 it is around 2750 RPMs.

FYI I have a Ford Escort and that is where I'm getting these numbers and the engine is rebuilt.

banjo, for your information, I am an auto tech, and a wrecker driver. A vehicle uses more gas on takeoff, and of course uses tons more gas in town than anything else, but at cruising speeds of around 60 mph on the interstate, you get far better mileage than doing 80.

If you also have a stickshift, and shift at lower RPMs, you will save on gas.

tifreak is right, of course. After a certain point your car will need more gas to keep up the speed do to more power required to combat the increased air resistance...

Yes, you can also compare to pushing a car. It takes a great deal of effort and energy to get it moving, but once it starts moving, you need less energy to keep it moving. Same thing with the whole plane thing you were trying to act like you knew about. It takes a great deal of effort to get their, but once there, it requires less fuel to maintain it being in the air and moving...

The reason you get better mileage on the highway than on the city is because you don't spend half your time with your car stopped at a light.
How could you think going faster takes less fuel? That defies logic.

If people wanted to be fuel-efficient, everyone would go around in motorless blimps that didn't need to be deflated ever. I mean, that's what I plan to do...

I personally have no problems with the ads on calcg... In fact, I have nothing against ads in general, unless they have popups... then they musst die.

Coincidentally, today the ads are for calculators and oil >_>
