Z check this out when you get back, i'm sure i saved you a lot of work (unless you already did it without telling me. lol)
www.calcgames.org/cgi-bin/files/files.cgi? action=list&type=all&calc=all
(and take out the space)

check out the source too, it's in a database, those are both just examples, the 2nd one i did just to see if having 2 download links would work (which it did)

wow B, that's very cool. i haven't gotten time to start that project, so it's very nice you did. we'll work on improving the functionality of the script and i'll check out the source later today.

(i'll try to tell you too)... things that HAVE to be added (i was too lazy to do so) next 3 authors script (you'll know what that is when you look at the source where it makes the author html tags and stuff)

hey B, i'm currently working on the file managing script and man, it's pretty complex. if you can, please add our pending files by hand coz it's a bit uncertain as of how much time I'll need to finish it. I also have some questions about the administration stuff, so pls catch me on AIM when u're back.

update: i've just finished adding the games section into the db (only the Tankers maps haven't been added though). the db structure has been decided on and is now used. the file viewing script has been updated and seems to run corretly. some things still need changing however and it will most likely be update as i work on adding remaining files. you can take a look at the changes B and the db itself. and for you, our visitors, there's a link to the test script above. you guys can try it out and get a peek at how the new file system will work. have fun. please report any errors or problems to zkostik@calcgames.org. thanks!

update:
files added-
all games
all programs
all projects

files to add-
tankers maps
ebooks
emulators
roms

when i finish adding all the files, i'll get around to complete the file viewer and will add it to the site. while that, i'll work on file options for users and stats. if you wanna see what's done at this moment, follow this 'http://www.calcgames.org/cgi-bin/files/files.cgi?action=list&type=all&calc=all' link and tinker around with the filter. have fun! :)

NICE job Z! i know that must have been a lot of work and i wish i could have helped out.. i browsed through a little bit and noticed one file out of place - password pro says it's an 82 game.. (should be 89 program)

i didn't browse very much so that's all i caught.. when it gets done i'll check it out a lot more

nice work

aight B, fixed. thanks for finding this. it's just coz form resets sometimes and i didn't catch when it did so and hence the file type came out to be the first option in the list. if you get some time, please take a look over the currently added files just to make sure everyhitng is in order. i'd go over them myself, but i'm just too busy with my job and only get some time to work on adding files and the script. i'm also sure it'd be easier to fix bugs/typos while we have less files in the db.

update:
okay, i finally got some free time and added some goodies. sorry, i haven't added the rest of files yet, only worked on the script. either way, i would have had to do that anyway.

-changed the file info page a bit. added some new fileds. created several templates that will be used depending on files viewed.
-added a short name so that file titles can be named defferently to look better in menu
-now files descriptions/types/categories show correcty
-added the to be worked on links to reviews and rating
-changed the download icon in the menu from arrow to a small diskette
-added several more fields to the database, hopefully these were the last needed
-typing the ID used for querying files in lower case will no longer cause the program to crash
-some internal stuff

Update:
-one more filter added, which is "category" filter

calc filter (calc=) -> platform of the program (83p, 89, etc.)
type filter (type=) -> type of the program (game, program, etc.)
category filter (cat=) -> category of the orogram (asm, baisic or flash)

-all filters are optional now. with no filters you'll get the same results as with all filters set to "all".

the new look of the link is below:
http://www.calcgames.org/cgi-bin/files/files.cgi?action=list&calc=all&type=all&cat=all

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
erm...dunno whether anybody is interested in this anyways, but i do hope everyone will like the new system. the link to the test run above still works, click to see the most up-to-date system.

update:
-added download counter (download counters will be reset when i finish the file system anyways...)

issues:
the last db item, or one that has the ID of 0 crashes the program. this will be resolved soon as i'm suspencting where the problem might lie. all other files work.

Update: Above issue was fixed. Files ID's now start from 1. Problem was actually caused by Perl, not the script.

k Z... now we need a way to sort the files... at least by name... but we'll also want by # of downloads and date and stuff... a while back i looked in to this and was very disapointed at how difficult it's gonna be... well... maybe not... i'm used to limited RAM on calculators... i guess you can make arrays as big as you want in perl huh... there's a sort function i think that takes an input array and an output array as arguments... the only problem is that the first field will have to be whatever you want to sort by... which isn't actually much of a problem cus we're not limited to the slow speed of a calculator!... well... just try to get this figured out... i should be unbanned in a matter of a couple weeks so look forward to my return.

yeah, there's a sort function and we don't have to worry about memory it uses since Perl manages it. anyways, i'll look into this a little later. i just want to get done with more basic features first and also finish building the db itself.

update: today i've added all the Tankers maps. so, only the ROMs and emu's are left to be added.

update:
-all files added and total up to 80 (w/t GBA files, we won't have them for a while).
-fixed some bugs
-added the query checking to prevent errors. all query items are not case sensitive. giving the invalid section or type will not result in an error but will merely give you a listing of all files. that might be changed though.
-after i make sure everything works correctly, i'll add the review and rating functionality as well as file listings associated with user accounts

!!! PLEASE, if anyone can, test the file script (link above or http://www.calcgames.org/cgi-bin/files/files.cgi?action=list&calc=all&type=all&cat=all) with various filter keywords, etc. with/without some parameters and with bs parameters. i'd appreciated any bug/typo reports. that'd really help me a lot. thanks. !!!

in my opinion - the one thing that seperates ticalc.org from all other sites is its incredible rating system.. and i think we should have one SIMILAR (but not identical cus that'll look bad if we copy everything)... the thing we need after file database is an author database... format would be something like:

instead of author 1-4 and email 1-4 we could just have author ID 1-4... which would match up with that author's text file (each author will have their own text file to make it easier(unless you know something i don't know that'd make one big text file better?)) and in the text file - the first line will look like:

author_name|author_email|
file1
file2
file3
file4

etc... the last | on the first line would be to make it easier to seperate the first line from the rest of the file (i'm no perl expert though)

and of course the file#'s will be the ID number of the file

and for the file stats... we'll have to have some protections... i think it should log the IP of the most recent 10 downloads and if 5 of them are the same it'll cut the number of downloads in half or remove them completely... in my personal experience i DO download the same files two or three times in a matter of a few minutes cus i don't want to browse through the temp folder for stuff i "opened" instead of "saved" and accidently closed...

we should not make one big db because it will be VERY slow. i don't know about having as powerful stat system as ticalc, but we ofcouse can have the total dls for each author, maybe this weeks dls. logging IP could work, yes. let's discuss this over AIM cuz its easier that way.

update: rating system is now up and running. check the test page above and try it out for yourself. oh, don't get too happy voting for your files because this is only a demo and finaly version will only let you vote once and will be associated with you forum account.

also, i need some feedback on whether we should have multiple reviews or just one. anyways, only first review will appear on the file page and the rest would be shown separately.

good job Z.. but there's a problem - at a certain point, voting will have no impact on the results because apparently it only stores the most recent rating, and if a file's ranking is 5 with 10,000 votes, then a 10 won't change that, and the ranking will remain 5...

btw, i got an email from TI that the results are in from the apps contest and that i won SOMETHING (probably a pen, although it did say that one of my apps won, so i guess that means at least whatever runner up is)... october 1st they'll post the results

yeah, but what would you suggest? i doubt we'll get that many votest anyway coz to vote you'd need an account. and of course, one positive vote won't change the overall bad rating of a file, which is in fact a good thing and will keep the correct rating.

lol, you'll get at least something. maybe another calc cover case ;-)

damit, TI redesigned their site once again. and guess what, it's even harder to find stuff now! i couldn't find what i was looking for before and now its even worse...

oh lol, i just noticed that TI has finally updated a long dead f2s link to CG! at least somethin's good about this. oh, and now i see why there's that rindex.htm!

yeah, i did that... Z, can you learn how to do the Location: thingy, but in PHP so we can upload an index.php to race2/ directory so it redirects server sidely?

btw, the problem of static results occurs at like 10 votes!... my suggestion is keep the SUM of ALL votes and then just divide when you want to display the integer... that should work

umm...what's wrong with a statis results? i mean, do you really expect once vote to change whole thing? look at the ratins system at Amazin.com...same thing there. anyways, you can try changing this thing around and see if you come up with better results. you'll see where script calculates the results. it does it after reading data from the db. also, please do take a look at why teemz user cookies don't work. we'll need to read them correctly to make this thing work. thanks

okay, nm that post above. rating system is total crap and something's needed to be done about this. i'm not exactly sure what, but why not keep the db record as a float and just display it as an int? (that should be much more accurite)

well, floats are better but still not too great. dunno, i'll try keeping the total score, and see if it'll be better.

well yeah. just keep the sum of all votes, then when someone votes, add their rating to the sum, and then add 1 to the total number of votes... when displaying just divide
