we're gonna have to start finding ways to conserve bandwidth (smaller images, smaller pages, etc....)... at this current rate we should be fine for august, but by the end of september, if this keeps up it'll cost me like $30...

Not all the games even have screenshots. But I think taking out the animated screenshots would help. Replace the animated screens with just 2 STILL screenshots - at most.
And the SC projects page also is probably another source of picture bandwith being used. Especially this picture: http://www.calcgames.org/site/projects/ti89/sc/scsmall.jpg
Perhaps smaller resolution on it? Less colors, and in GIF format would also make it smaller. Or lower quality JPEG at a smaller resolution.

Yeah, I think we should cut down on animated gifs. Some gifs we have weigh over 400kb which is pretty useless anyway. I'd try to stay under 50kb for animated gifs. Any other suggestions are welcome.

To B: If you need, I'll help out with site costs. Just let me know.

Shouldn't calculator screenshots be better compressed if saved as .gif's since they're rarely more 4 colors?

basically all animated gifs over 400 KB are linked to ticalc.org... now, 37% of bandwidth is used by .cgi files... so i'm thinking we could remove all line breaks and unnecesary spaces from the templates.... that should help a little. also making the stats page only list 50 files at a time (i think i'm one of like 2 people who look at that page (looking through the logfiles) but that should also help some)...

does anyone think organized html files are important? if not i'm gonna remove line breaks and stupid spaces from the news template and the file page template.

also i'll try to see if we can leach off of ticalc.org on some more screenshots (their bandwidth is free, i believe)

oh yes B, i forgot to tell you that i downloaded a full site backup last week. so, it used up a good deal of out transfer. 8.5 megs for site stuff and forum and around 20 for files and pub.
ticalc runs their own servers, so technically they have no bandwidth limit. i still don't think we should link all screens to them because bandwidth leeching isn't a very appreciated practice.

Spiral: gifs are natively LZW compressed.
Barret: Hey I look at it too! I think the top 25 should be sufficient enough since our # of files in our archive is not that big (its big, but not like ticalc.org).

I would only try bandwidth leaching for significantly large animated screen shots.

I don't know when it'll be but when I choose to get .mac I'll be happy to spare some of my 100 MB online storage space with this site. The price for it is $99 bucks a year, but untill Sep. 17 it is only $67.

alright, i have removed (or converted to a still) a lot of the very large .gifs on this site. all together they accounted for about 15% of the bandwidth this site used. i also removed the "view all" options which should reduce bandwidth by another 8%. i'm guessing we should be able to last MOST of next month, but we still may need to suspend the site for several days close to the end of september.

it might be a lot Z.. there isn't even a set number on how much it'll cost.. it just says "however much we say you owe"... we've got 12 GB transfer in 12 days, so i don't know.... we'll see..... i removed a lot of large .gifs and got rid of "view all".... i think it's going down a lot, so we might even be fine.

Remove the gif for my "Digital Waters" map pack. That thing is pretty huge. Go ahead and remove it if necessary.

Wow, gig a day eh? That might come out pricey. How much would it cost to upgrade to the next plan btw? Would it be of any use?

the next plan is twice as much money but only gives us 5 more GB bandwidth. if we wanted to go to the next plan, it's 4x as much money and we'd get 50 GB transfer

Yeah I would try to figure out something like what spiral said. If I lived near you I would help support the server by giving you the money but right no that is not very possible.
