I figure you guys should know this, at least Z should....

Ok, I'm in the process of making my own site, actually coding HTML by hand (well, word processer), because I figure I should make my first site right...then use the dreamweaver typeish programs...

That didn't make sense, did it...
Okay, I'm learning HTML to get a foundation...

Anyways....I've got forms all set up, but how exactly do you set up a database for the forms to goto, without having to have the user mail the form to you? I think I need some kind of script...but what kind I need to process the forms is beyond me...thats what I need help with...

Actually all I need to know is how to set up a server folder to hold the forms...and the HTML needed to send the form submissions to the folder...

Edit: Also, how do you make it so a site needs a password/user name to load/read the page? I'm not looking for SSL or anything robust...but a simple password...

Yeah, you need a some kind of form handler and perl or php are some of the many choices you have. Search the internet because there are tons of various form handler scripts that are available for free which you can use. Once you get something I or B could help you get it running (mainly perl scripts though). Easiest way is to use your website control panel to password protect a specific directory, you could also use a script to do that in case your webhost doesn't offer such a feature (that'd be of course much more difficult). Speaking of SSL, that's a whole different thing and you need a special server to use it but most likely you wouldn't even have it unless you have a pretty advance (and expensive) webhosting plan.

Thank you, I've been (slowly) figuring out that I needed a perl script of some sort...

About the website control panel, if that accesible from your host, or through an FTP client?

that would be accessible via the http just using your browser. ftp is only for files. on our server for instance, we have a dediacted port where you can go and login to the admin panel. ask your host (or look the their help page) to find out how you can access yours. the level of control you get from admin panel varies from host to host since they have different amounts of money to spend on the admin panels so there is a slight chance you may not have that option. you could also restrict access to files via .htaccess (also if your host supports it). who's your host btw? maybe we can try to help you find out if they support these feats or not...

EDIT: oh, its earthlink...these free sites don't offer that kind of control, at least to my knowledge. you'd need a script to get the login thing on this host. also keep in mind these free hosts have many script restrictions too, but a simple login script should run okay.
