ticalc.org just made a big change (big for us, at least)... links to zips from our site go to that file's directory page and the screenshots go to a modified ticalc.org logo...

So this will take some work to fix (we're gonna have to host 100% of the files now.... as of this moment about 60 link to ticalc.org). I would start to fix it but i have work in 13 minutes.

As a note of why we do (did) this, some authors have requested that we link their files to ticalc.org so that ticalc.org stats reflect downloads they get here... this may not be fair for other authors at ticalc.org, but we don't make that big of an impact (or we didn't use to)... so that's why we linked there.

That is rather cranky of ticalc.org to do that. :-(

only cranky that they did not bother to tell anyone. I've talked to at least one staff member about why we send them so many requests, so they KNEW we linked there.

It is not good policy to leech, especially now that our site is as big as it is. It is understandable that they would do that (even though they have unlimited bandwidth...).

I'm only upset that they didn't announce it on their site or in an e-mail. (I believe it was morgan who i talked to about this, and about a week ago, so they definitely knew).

That's what I meant, about not telling anyone about that policy change.

Yeah, it sucks coz we'll have to mirror and relink quite a few files. No more getting hits here and on ticalc too. It does kinda suck that there was no announcement for such a change to give us time to fix things up and neither were there complaints about remote loading from our site. Oh well, I guess now its going to be two separate sites. I do understand their move though. I'll be relinking and mirroring files tomorrow.

i've done about 27 or so zip files... still a few more than 30 to go.

I fixed the news screenshots... we still have to fix news links to .zip files, and a whole lot of screenshots in the files section.

that really bites...

ticalc is a cool site and all, but that's just messed up for them to do that w/o a warning.

Okay, I think I got the rest of zips and screens. Please let us know if there are any errors or whatever. Though, I did check the files to make sure everything works.
To dark: Its messed up from our site, but THEY're the ones who pay for servers and link. They could have at least announced that they're going to take down remote loading. I did anticipate something like that tho, especially with their size of file archive. Only thing that sucks now is that stats will be separate and our dls will not go towards ticalc dl stats.

If the archives here are just leeched off ticalc.org, why bother having an archive page here at all?

Sometimes people ask where they can go for games other than ticalc.org. I always think well yeah, there are other places, but why bother?

while i agree that ticalc.org is great, this site has a more friendly atmosphere due to fewer users and more topics to discuss.

Henh, I just upload my avatar's onto my earthlink webspace. At least that's good for something. And that I don't have to see all of the avatar requests in my normal server logs. :-/

No, archive here are NOT JUST leeched from ticalc. Some users who submit files have requested that their files be linked to ticalc so that they get downloads at both places. One of these people is Greg Dietsche for instance and he's got lots of files, I and Barrett also had our files linked to ticalc to boost their standings there. Mario was also asked to be linked to ticalc for obvious reasons. I don't see anything bad about people wanting dls for their files... We had around 60 or so files linked to ticalc. The total files we have in our archive is close to 500.

Here is the laydown. Yes ticalc.org over the last week or two has been working on this. But the intent was no to be evil. However I was forced not to tell anyone of this change and just let everyone figure out on their own. Which I think is evil becasue you are obviously going to see.

The main goal here was to prevent even fewer entire copies of the ticalc archives from being sold and such. Programs like wget and other mirroring programs won't work as easy with the changes made.

As far as the screenshots, I have no clue. This is really pointless in my mind.

Oh no prob Morgan. I pity those lame people who sell the archive on cd. Only thing that we really valued is having download stats count here and on ticalc. I guess that won't be possible anymore unless its possible to create some kind of special handlers for that but that probably not worth bothering. You could have screens open since they go into separate folders but that has no point since files can't be remote loaded. Oh well, we've got everything fixed now so its all good.

I could try and get them to remove the screenshot thing and re-enable direct linking of screenshots. I seem to recall that among that staff it was rather unknown why that wasbeing done in the first place. Should I try and see if I can get that part of the recent updates removed?

BTW, Since I haven't seen you online yet, welcome to our staff. If you really want to try and get them to allow direct downloads I say feel free. The only time we "suffer" bandwidth-wise is when school starts.
