is there a maximum size(in kb) and size(in pixels^2) allowed for avatars?

There isn't a maximum size for an avatar since they're not hosted by CG and it can't check their size. However, if you put a really heavy avatar pic you'll get a friendly message from an admin and will have to take it of or scale it down. As with pixels, it can be any resolution but on your forum profile manager you only get a certain list of size choices whereas a 120x160 is the largest size. There are also choices which are 4:3 ratio as well as other generic avatar sizes. Your avatar will only show up in this size and if its bigger it will be shrunk down (the file size will still remain same. basically, your avatar will only appear in the resolution you've seleted at your profile control). I suggest you choose an avatar size and crop/rescale your wanted avatar pic to that size. That way you'll keep the size down and it'll show up exactly like you've made it w/t any resizing.

Generally, it doesn't care what pic format you use but you won't be able to put a mov or swf for an avatar because img src tag won't work with it. It would have worked in avatar text, but it's truncated to 15 chars so it won't work there. If you really want it, you can put it into your sig but I would advise you not to. If you really want to post something small movie of flash, just put it into a post.

Macromedia Flash studio allows you to convert between swf and animated gifs. Try that.

nuts i was going to use a small swf file as my avatar. its 56 kb. and it is interactive so it must be a .mov or a .swf...

It won't work unless we code in support for that. Having in mind possibilities of flash that probably won't happen. So I'd agree with Lunchbox, its probably best to just convert your flash into a gif, of course it will lose its interactivity.

I also got plenty of space for avatars if people need hosting. But, I will only host to regulars.

No, that would chew up bandwidth and slow down page load time like heck. I know allyn for one was stuck w/ 28k dial-up for a while, and even on my dsl that'd take about ~2 more secs to load/execute. Just post it here once and we'll see if it'll work in gif format.

It's not the size of your flash, it's giving people wrong ideas. You can put it in your sig if it's not annoying. Go ahead and put it in, you'll know if people hate it :).

Except the sigs don't allow html code, or mine doesn't, I don't think...

it wont work with a gif, it is interactive. its a game where theres a ti83+ on a 120x160 background and you click it and try to pick up as many as you can before you... get bored i guess. and it displays the score. to make it harder (not that it is anyway chanllenging) the calculator relocates every 1/2 sec to 1 sec.

ill post it later. soon. here.

Oh, I guess I forgot that we took out html from sigs. I could rethink it... Though, 120x160 pic is too big for an avatar anyway and I'm not even talking about a sig. Just post your game in a message so that folks can play it and keep your current avatar which looks unique enough if you ask me.

my game doesnt simulate a screen. its like one of the ad games where you try to click as many things as you can. its 160 high by 120 wide.
but i am developing a game in java, flash, and calc at the same time, with the same graphics and everything. maybe i should just finish them and release them simultaneously on this site :).
