Hey guys, I wanted to announce a couple of things here and would like to hear your opinion on the idea, although it will probably be put in action either way. However, your thoughts will no doubt be taken into consideration.

Anyways, it seems that a file cleanup is needed on CG. Below are some of the key reasons for this to be done:

{} old files with low interest need to be removed
- will free up server space --> more room for new files! maybe even an upload cap increase...
- will make it easier to find files
- will improve archive quality
- fewer files will put less strain on our server and thus help with performance and page load times

{} files with poor ratings will need to be reviewed by staff and questionable quality ones will be voted for deletion
- pretty much the same reasons as above
- helps improve file quality ratio and overall end-user satisfaction

I'll have a list of unpopular files compiles in the following week or two and it will be posted here for review. The list and its contents will be made based on our file stats and popularity scores, second list of low rated files will be made separately. These lists are unbiased and will be made based on our stats, so if you see your files there, don't think that we have something against you but rather think that other files that are more popular will get more attention once the junk files are eliminated. Quality is better than quantity, if you dobut that, try finding a file you want on ticalc.org... Their site is awesome and so is their archive but it's very time consuming to find right things in there and we don't want to end up the same here at CG. For any listed files that you think should be kept for some reason, you can post a *constructive and informative* comment as to why you think so. However that doesn't mean that file will stay but it will get a personal review rather than just be deleted based on stats. Also, this file cleanup will only cover regular files and not map or texts, only programs will be subject to a cleanup.

Please post your thoughts and ideas here before I start on this project. Please be as constructive as possible and I hope your ideas will help the overall wellbeing of CG.

Thanks for your input everyone!

This is certainly something that I've been wanting to do for a while - so I'm glad that someone has finally decided to clean things up a bit. :)

I'm extremely busy right now (and I assume you are as well), but let me know if there's anything that I can do to help, and I'll do the best I can.

Edit
I can pick out several of mine that deserve deletion. And yes, wonderful idea. Maybe I'll start compiling a TI-83+ list tomorrow, which should be a free day for me.

Well, crappy or not but that's ultimately for the downloaders to decide...since we submit our files not for ourselves but for others to check out, then quality will ultimately be a huge factor. For instance many people submit their random stuff or their first games, while they are an achievenent they rarely will have a big wow factor and its probably good idea to take them off to make room for better content or your newer stuff that's better since you probably got more coding experience for the timebeing. That's how I see things so no fingers pointed, and that applies to ALL files on CG (though, mainly old ones...I'd guess 6mo or older or something like that), not any select ones so basically speaking anything that has absolutely no value will probably be tossed to make archive much cleaer and quality oriented.

To allyn: I or you if you have some time need to make a script to make a list of such files based on our db. We can then look at it and post here to hear other people's opinions. I'll try to start it this wednesday and will post back once I get something done or toss you a pm w/ details.

Thanks for the input everyone, I'm glad that you see this as a positive move forward to improve CG and our visitor's experience.

I only made one game, but I consider it to be pretty good. No deleting for me.

Cool. You're cleaning the server. That is an excellent idea--there are some pretty bad games and things on this site. I'd like my game Punk Quest deleted from the server. It's in two versions, so make sure to get them both. My other two games are newer and they are much better quality. Please keep Quadratic Formula- it's a very good quadratic solver program and it's the only math program I've got.

Maybe someday haveacalc, that'd be a pretty huge project to add more categories. Eventually if we'll have time we may redo the code to make it easy for us to make additional file categories but not now, there's simply no free time to do all that. Thanks for the idea though, we'll put it on our to-do list so perhaps we'll get to it eventually.

To everyone: I was suggesting categories. Then the irrelevance became overwhelming and I deleted my post.

I think it is a good idea

but I how about this idea

instead of delleting the files move them to another part of the site called old files or something that way they are away from the popular files, and CG wont end up like ticalc.org. Like zkostik and my band director said "Quality over Quanity" but quanity is good to as long as you have it organized where it is easy to find what you are looking for. For example when you open your C: you don't see all of the files on it. It is catagorized in folders and sub folders and sub sub folders. I understand that speed is good I agree I just do not think that delleting files that people put time into is the right thing to do. Grannit some files need to be delleted for example any program that cheks you calculator for virces or my first prgm that was never accepted into CG called Game V1.0 wich made a loop of displaying nummbers. prgms like this should be delletd.

All i am trying to say is that instead of delleting the files they should be put in another catagory. and if the files are delleted then the authors should be notified

I hope my oppinion helps,
Zachary Redmon (Zachary940)

To quote Zachary in some parts of his speech: "delleting, quanity, catagorized, delleting, grannit, delleted, nummbers, delletd, catagory, oppinion" :img20:

Organizing files wouldn't clear up space, though.
