I'd like to suggest a contest, one for Super Mario 2.0 for the TI-83+. Best level set wins, must contain three normal levels, one bowser level at the end. Judged in: challenge, bug-proof, fun, original, graphical.
Sound good?

whoops, hadn't thought about that...
i dunno... popularity?
i just thought it would be a fun little thing to do, but I guess an incentive would help. mention on the newsboard, maybe? I could ask the administrators. I'm just suggesting this, i don't really want to run it. But I would run it, if people told me to.
I doubt they would.

we could definitely host a contest like this. Currently we're not getting THAT much extra money, but the only thing I'd want to have prizes for would be something that benefits the site. However, if the other admins want to give a prize for something like a mario level set, then I'd go through with it... I just think there are a few contest we could host (like a t-shirt design one) that would benefit the site itself, and that's where I'd like to concentrate the prizes that would require money.

It's a good idea, but make it like, 5 levels, plus a boss level. Most mario levelsets are too small, IMO. But we need a really good mario level, alot are not really very good.

Except for 'Revenge of the Goombas', that one is the best one ever. It took me forever to beat it, but it's highly satsfiying...trust me.

If you go through with this, be sure to tell TIcalc about it, I'm sure they'll advertise it.

yeah, you're right about the shortness of the levels, i should make mine longer. But not overly long, like some of mine...

personally, i feel that a contest would help out a site like this. You could host it and mention it on ticalc, and this site would get more visitors. More people would submit better files. The winner gets... well, thats undecided. But a mario level contest would help out the site somewhat.

btw... why doesn't my avatar work right? is geocities a valid web host on this site and what type of pic file do i use? I set the size right, im sure of it

the size resizes the picture, it shouldn't interfear with the displaying itself...
does your host allow external linking...?

usually site's like geocities, tripod, etc. don't allow remote loading. reasons are obvious... if you rarely change your avatar we could host it here.

as with contest, it's hard to say. the primary contest would still be a t-shirt but we could host a mario level contest. i don't know about the prizes though since not only we're a bit tight on money but paying for mario levels isn't liekly to be sponsored by anyone. we definitely could put it on front page or news and such but that's about it. besides, what kind of reasonable prize would anyone offer for a mario level set? well, shout your ideas and i'll see about it. don't forget that if you do suggest a prize that money will go out of my pocket since we didn't make a ton of money on our ads (we have to put money aside for hosting and back to school time bandwidth cost). make a reasonable suggestion.

How much extra bandwidth does BTS require? I've never thought of that, but you're right.

well, i general BTS traffic is from 2-5 times our normal. we usually use around 5-6 gigs a month on these slow days and BTS last year we were barely hanging over our 15 gig transfer month after month. extra bandwidth cost i think is around $5 for gig or so. and since we ain't printing money here we kinda count that. we should be okay because our advertising is going really well, at least convering server costs. off of next paycheck we should have some extra money for our contest. we should have at least $50 or so and this isn't all that bad. this will be enough to provide some prizes for our contestants. we obviously are not TI to give out calcs and $3K prizes but it would be nice to give at least something. right?

well, make it a yes but a prize will just be a feature on the website and news of course. anyone can make a mario level so i don't think this sort of contest deserves a real prize so the real prizes will be offered only on our t-shirt contest so that overall result can benefit the website. though, if we do receive some good and popular levels we *may* offer something from our store. you can go ahead an make a contest page but don't promise anything except site feature. when done you can email me or Barrett the page and we'll post it on the site.

you and CG admins can judge. don't worry about the programming and just make a text file with rules since it's your contest, but we'll help you out. once you're done with rules text, email it to me and i'll set everything up so that people know we're having a contest.

ok fine.

THe contest will be for 2.0. But if you mark it or make it compatable for both versions, that would be nice.

And i'll get that text written. Its easier now that its summer.

Both, since 2.0 is unoffical, and I don't know if ticalc.org even has 2.0

So maybe the level will have to be for both, or 1.2, but not solely for 2.0...

I got your email and will post the page soon. I think we could offer a free t-shirt or something like that to the first winner (provided that we get enough submissions) and second winner will get featured on the site.

alrighty! lets roll! We should leave it up for about a month, take mabye a week to judge. How are we gonna know that the levels were meant for the contest? Or should every level submitted be automatically entered?

Well, when we had Tankers map contest last year we asked people to write in file description if they want it to be in our contest. Since we have certain quality requirements and such we can't accept every submitted level. Also, we'll need a decent amount of entries so we'll need to advertise it somehow. As we get our T-shirt contest out it may replace the frontpage contest notice (but we might combine the two, we'll see).

hmm... sounds good. Maybe a screenshot of the winning mario level could be inserted onto the t-shirt! (don't listen to me, my ideas are weird)
Putting them both on the same notice is what i was thinking

Okay, I've made the contest page. Please go ahead and check it out and if everything's okay give me a green light and I'll post a news article with the contest info (we will not have a contest banner this time though, it's only for the major contests). Here's the link: Mario Level Contest. Please let me know if you guys don't like any of the screens or see any typos or would like to have something changed. If everything's okay, I'll post the thing tomorrow.

It looks good, theres one place where there should be a space. I do think that it should be more noticeable about the submission process, IE: Emphasize it. Also, maybe put something on the file submission form about the mario level contest, a check box perhaps?

Cool, cool. I like the page. Personally, i'd like to show screenshots of my mario levels on my submissions, but i have NO idea how.
BTW: There technically is no JcCorp staff. I just don't like writing
"Made By: Jc" on everything. I guess my little brother could count- he's made a level on this site (the newer one that i made). But he loves to review things, so he's going to help me.

Email me the screens of your levels and I'll add them. The screens are only added when they're attached with your archive. We obviously have the lives of our own and don't have time to take screens for all the files. So if you want your file to have screens you'll have to cap them and either include in the archive or email me (don't forget the file ID they go to!).
Do you think instructions should be simplifed into a few words? After writing all this and then reading I think some people may get confused or not want to read all of the text...
Ah, who cares we can just leave JC staff there. It looks better and if its applicable here "more professional".

Less might be better, who knows what stupidity lurks in the brains of men these days.
And i know how to send you the screenshots, but how do i take them? I think i've tried ti's Screen Capture thingy but that didn't work. Do I have to use a camera or something?
And you just restated why i use the name JcCorp. Lol

Use VTI and then you want to take a screen right click and choose "take screenshot" option. Then, choose black & white with not lcd color and save to file or clipboard. Though, I'd appreciate if you convert the files into gif format.
Btw, speaking of long text I think it has nothing to do with stupidity. When there's a lot of text anyone can accidnelty skip a word or somehting and when it comed to rules it may not be good. However, if you've ever looked at a credit card contract you may easily conclude that lots of text (even when it comes to rules) isn't regarded as a problem :). Interesting...

nope...unless someone will be nice enough to share a rom with you which is illegal, so i guess you're out of luck for now. i've posted the contest page and a new article so if you do get to cap your screens we can change them later. the current ones will do fine for now. make sure to check that contest forum page from time to time and to advertise it in other places so that we get more submissions.
