I don't know about the rest of you, but I just/are/am trying the opera browser, and it's much better than IE. It loads faster (Big plus on dial up) but displays more information and has better features overall. The only downside is an add in the upper right hand side, but you can get rid of that if you switch to full screen mode.

Edit: Calcgames.org loads at least 5X faster...

Mozilla or Mozilla Firefox is also great for loading faster on dialup. And it's completely free and open source.

Is Opera still not free? See my profile for a quote about software :). That especially applies to everyday things like browser or media players. Btw, BSPlayers is one of teh best music/video players around and its free (much better than WMP and Winamp sound/video qualitywise).

i had BS player for movies a while ago, it was pretty good for video, didn't raelly impress for music though.

Mozilla doesn't have ads in upper right, Opera is sort of free, but I still prefer Mozilla. Probably a good idea to try out both.

Okay, the next time I'm in the school's library I'll DL monzilla and burn it on my CD-RW (Great thing, T1-lines and Cd-burners combined :-) )

yeah, older versions of BS player didn't do too good for music. though, newer versions come with a DSP plugin with TONS of settings anf it now sounds really good, even better than WMP9 (which also have a DSP plugin now). I btw have a home theater in my room so it's really easy to tell good sound from not so good. Btw, new BS player fully supports AAC Dolby DTS sound and few DIVX movies that come encoded with that truly rock. I actually suggest you try out the news BS player S. it also have much improved playlist now coz old versions had a really poor playlist support.

speaking of T1 lines, they were really slow in my school. i guess that's because of too many comps. in general, T1 isn't all that fast but it's symmetric unlike most home broadband connections so when it comes to server business it sort of makes up for it. i have a 4.5mbps cable at home and can download about 520kb/s (should be more than that tho) max and upload around 52kb/s max. on T1 you'd get around 190kb/s but in both ways. in my case our cable connection flows into our home network, so lack of upstream bandwidth sometimes creates a bottleneck which wouldn't be the case on a T1. in school my download speeds never really went anywhere beyond 80kb/s. which isn't too bad comparing to dialup of course.

well mozilla firefox is only like 3 megabytes or something, full thing is like 12-15 megabytes, so it's little problem to download even on dialup.

The version of BS player i used was the one from a few months ago. Great for movies (but i primarily watch dvd's and use Intervideo, which is decent for dvd's), i use to use cyberlink, but computer had to reinstall everything and version of kazaa doesn't seem to like computer anymore.

T1 is better for business because you can upload quicker. If you get a special type of DSL, it's close to T1 speeds. T1 is very good things like bittorrent and sharing on m-irc.

I am the TA for the teacher who is like the computer technition for the school and one day he showed me that all of the schools internet went through one cable, that is probably why it is not so fast at school, because there are manny computers using the same conection.

Our school has (I think) 3 T1 lines for about...oh, 150 computers, with peak usage of 50 computers online at any one time.
I got around 95kb/s DL speed.

I think we have several t2 or t3 lines or something.

We know that's why it's slower jessef, but internet just doesn't depend on number of computers, but amount people are downloading, like if everybody is using nothing or just light browsing it doesn't slow everyoen else down. But i remember we would go to the middle school computer lab and all load heavy-picture sites, everybody's internet would crawl.

Thats the great thing with my school, no-one seems to download anything..

Side Note: Look at what my A+ teacher watches his students computers with, it's rather irritating: http://www.pestpatrol.com/PestInfo/a/activity_monitor.asp

My school has T1, but it's wicked slow because of all that's on it:
Every computer in the school system (one high school, one middle school, and and four elemntary schools), city hall, the People's Institute, etc. When I take classes at Smith College (students at my high school get to take courses there for free) I use their internet. It's soooo fast. I ususally get around 300kbps download rate. For comparison, on my DSL at home I get around 75.

yeah S, i also use Cybelink PowerDVD for dvd playback. it's a really good player. intervideo dvd player doesn't like my comp for some reason and doesn't even startup and besides, i got the powerdvd free with my asus mobo. right now i mostly watch divx/xvid so i use BS for that and watch my dvds on a portable dvd player i got not so far ago (pretty cool actually and i love gadgets).
btw Dysfunction, colleges/univerities have MUCH better inet than high schools. many of my buds run game servers from the college. some colleges even have 100mbit hookups others have several T3 lines or maybe better. yeah, like i also said T1 is good for servers where high upload is also needed (btw, BitTorrent owns. nowdays i mostly use it over other sharing apps).

I still perfer watching DVD's on a TV, I find the larger screen and better sound (Compare Stereo vs. Surround). :-)

depends on how you set up your computer, you can easily have equal quality sound. I often prefer TV tho, b/c i focus more on movie, and it's bigger, but both are agood.

That's ironic Z, because PowerDVD won't start on my computer, but Intervideo will, i have an asus mobo too, but it's a crappy one. I got Intervideo w/ my dvd burner.

Z, you had to have looked at my profile copycat :p. I'm not sure what my school has. It might be a T1, but there are way too many computers on it, or it is because we go through a proxy or two for filtering content but our download is usually around 75KB/s peaking from time to time at an average of twice that. For music I use iTunes, movies=QT sometimes WMP, DVD=iDVD. Havre any of you guys tried iTunes? If you want visualizations, you'll have to look around a bit but they're there. Same for skins, but I don't know if this applies to the Windose version. I usually watch a DVD on my computer since I have some external speakers which are the second best in my house, and my LCD provides muh more quality than any CRT I've seen.

nope B, i'm kinda biased towards apple stuff in general. i did try itunes but it didn't offer as much flexibility as i found in BS, i'm pretty happy with BS for now.
speaking of tv/dvd, quite frankly my computer monitor is bigger than my tv, so i tend to use my computer to watch dvd more often. i have 7.1 surround receiver which is connected to my dvd/tv/xbox and my pc. :) i'd love to get a bigger tv but my room doesn't have a space for one. the corner when i have my tv only fits a 13" crt or ~20" lcd/plasma which i don't have money for (i can't afford a good lcd monitor, so i'm kinda stuck with my 17" samsung syncmaster which is okay). oh, if you were referring to a portable one, it doesn't really matter if its stereo or surround since its really close to me. it has aluminum cone speakers which produce very high quality sound. of course, surround is better anyhow.
i dunno what asus mobo u have S, but my asus p4c800-dlx is awesome. i find it funny though that your comp wouldn't run power dvd and mine intervideo. lol

Hey, cool, I just replaced Barret! ;)

I think we get the fact that your biased against Apple Z, you've said it just about every time I bring up the subject. But hey, we still have fun.
