the backlight on the lcd for my laptop just broke a couple hours ago!

so right now i'm doing an output to a CRT, which used to be on another computer. (until i feel like sending it in to get the backlight fixed)

guess what my graphics card is capable of with this crt...

2048x1536!

the entire menu to the left easily fits without any scrolling... and i can nearly fit the entire forum on the screen (default IE fonts non-full screen etc...)

i'll upload a screen shot some time soon... i can read everything... but i think i might get a headache some time soon.

I see you're using that program to make you feel like it's not windows...
But hey kudos on the resolution. I'm not too sure about LCD screens, but I've seen a dead one fixed with some soldering, but this is just a backlight problem. It's possible a fuse is dead, but may as well just send it in.

There are generally two cables that run from the laptop bady to the LCD, the power for the Backlight and the one for the display. One my mom's laptop about 5 months ago the power cable broke inside. It is just normal wear and tear. Kind of like bending a paper clip back and forth till it breaks. Sounds like the same just happened to you. You should be able to buy the replacement part online.

I don't like going over 1280x1024, and I have to set my fonts to larger.

That stinks about your LCD monitor, hopefully it's just the problem D mention because that's relatively cheap to fix.

Thats some res.
LCD's are usually a cable issue, because it's unlikely that all of the transistors in it broke at once, unless you had some odd power surge. It may be that one of the connections came out (That reminds me of when my grandpas computer broke. It wouldn't sign on to the internet, because it didn't recnoize the modem. He recentally moved, so I hit the computer, the modem fell back in place and the computer worked.).

I see... I actually never really used XP so I'm not all that familiar with it. I've only used the XP OS for a few minutes a month when I'm at a friend's house. I have two friends who use a program that makes XP similar in appearance to your computer, and it's decently configurable. And, yes, I tease them about it.
Sorry for misinterpreting the screenshot.

EDIT: I believe it's called Tweaking Toolbox XP, but I could be wrong.

holy s**t B, that's one hell of screen resolution. what size is the display? oh btw, too bad about the backlight. this would be kinda hard to fix actually. you could get a replacement part or just call the place where you bought if you still have warranty. i agree with D on his suggestion about the cable since your light blinks.

Actually, the silver appearance is one of the choices built into Windows XP i believe, it's also the same thing i use, the blue/geren wasn't for me.

Here on my mac I can choose between over 30 themes. There are a few ones I like. I can even make it look like any of the four 'flavors' in windows: 98 style, XP regualr (blue), XP silver, and XP tan/brown. RIgh tnow I'm using one similar to the silver but it looks alot better. Check it out (~277KB)

i just use the regular old skool windoze theme. i don't like that new XP style. i do however sometimes use Windows Blinds and Object Desktop when I feel like styling things up a bit. these tools give much better flexibility of style control.

how can you go with such a hodgepodge solution of using desktop monitor as output for so long? After using a laptop for a while, it was pretty hard/painful to revert to a mere CRT.
