Ok so I have an old computer (the same one that was making the beeping noises a couple of months ago if you can remember) and I formatted the hard drive in hopes of eliminating the noise (will that work?). Now I am going to upgrade it to Windows 2000 professional edition while I'm at it. So I was just wondering if I should use the FAT32 or the NTFS file system. The computer is a Pentium 2 processor with a 40 Gigabyte hard drive. I'm not really sure what NTFS is could somebody explain?

Thank You

NTFS is what Windows prefers. It supports much larger sectors and filesizes. Fat32 will only support a partition of 32GB. I suggest you use NTFS.

while formatting your drive MAY stop the beeping please understand that formattting the drive is NOT a practical way people use to stop beeping nosies.

If you have a super old computer then i would sugest DSL
Damn Small Linux

you can run it off a cd if you want the entire operating sytem is 50mb you would have to go to there web page to see i think you have to partition the harddrive into 1 section of 300mb and then the rest of the hardrive in another partition if you want to INSTAL it to your hard drive which is what i have done to a peice of junk comouter i found in my basement :) it has a 1g harddrive in it but now it runs smoothly with dsl and i can surf the internet and much more! you can even D/L games or more apps from there D/L area - they had a app that gives you a list of all the add-ons for dsl and you can click on them to d/l and install it is pretty cool and best of all it is free.

Sidenote- you can put a lot of stuff on it like doom, limewire, and my more fun things!

with my knowlege of computers formatting the hard drive wouldn't fix a beeping sound. But then agian i have never had a beeping sound comming from my hardrive.

I do have a question though. I have a 30GB hard drive that I want to install on my PC. every time I hook it up and trun on my comp. it acts like no hardrive is there. I have played with the things that put it on the mood. (Srry forget what they are called) Example Slave master or cables select. I have tried all of them but none work. It is an IBM Deskstar. The mother board of my computer I think i got that out of my HP. but the oter hardrives work so IDK. Any help would be nice.

Ok thank you for the advice.Zachary940 check that you are pluging it into the second connector on the ribbon if it is one of those types of hard drives. Otherwise I would suggest trying to plug it into another computer to make sure the hard drive isn't bad. This website was helpfull to me when I installed a second hard drive ehow . That's actually how I formatted this hard drive I thought it would be easier then messing with fdisk and all of that. I think those are called jumpers.

Well at least now you have some thing fun to take apart. Or hit with a hammer. I would suggest a star headed screw driver and a flat head to pry with if you choose the first.

So since you like fans. I have 2 extra fans where do you suggest I put them. I have one small heat sink and a cpu fan. But it already has a cpu fan and and the heat sink doesn't fit. They are from My old Pentium one computer.

Well I have an extra cpu fan that i put inbetwen my two cd drives. When i am installing stuff and have both going it gets hot and the cpufan keeps the air moving. I would use the other fan to create a cross flow of air. I have air comming in from the front and leaving threw the back. I did that because there was this time where my computer started to act funny and shortly after i smelt something funny from it.

Also there are two ways that fans get there power. One is directly from the power supply and the other is from the mother board. I fill up my mother board and then start adding to the main power supply. It is nice because when my comp gos on stand by the fans on the mother board trun off while the ones directly on the power stay on keeping air moving at all times.

That is the goal of fans to keep the air moving. As long as you do that you will be fine.

I have no idea about that one. Sounds crazy. Unless frezzing it will shrink it enough to where it would fit but I doubt that is what he was talking about.
