Hey guys, so, I've been noticing an increase in n00bs at all the forums I'm a part of, and that new guy, Captain_America pushed me over the edge, if at all posible, make it so members have to view the FAQ before they post, maybea little mini quiz of sorts. I'm totally agaisn spam. 1337 speak (unless its in IMs, and only one line >_> ^_^), and frst grdr tipe. So, I'm just thinking we might be able to reduce the question where we just put "Your question has been..." and have them select like what kind of calculator they havem we could also give them a list of games, and how to run them, shells needed for certain games, etc. In other words, we would need a lot of people, and someone really good at coding in {what ever language most of CG is in}, this is just a suggestion, and it would take (my estimate is) about a month to finish. But in the end, I think it may benefit CG, and we could include propaganda that would tell them to come to the forums to learn how to code their calcs. Does anyone else think that this would be a good idea?

That already exists. It's called the FAQ. It's been updated to include a list of games.

He's saying we should require people to answer questions easily found in the FAQ before the forum software allows them to post. That may be a good idea, but we are lazy bums and it'll never get coded. ;P

are you suggesting to be prompted to answer these only once, or everytime we want to post?

we could try an make some what of a "wizard" to help them find answers already posted, but no one uses search :( when you want to post a new topic someone should add a line about reading the FAQ and or searching before posting just as an extra reminder

I personally agree with Coffmanrunner, as that does not seem to difficult, and it would not be invasive, which the aforementioned quiz type thing would probably be. Adding in a clause on the "Add new topic" page I think would be a very good idea.

Edit
Once again LHoT10820, don't call me a nub. I may be new to the forums but I have been a member of irc for months, and you have been a forum member for < month. And I also stated in the forum and irc I was joking, and the members of irc who took more then a second realized it was me and that I was joking...

Captain: I'd call that a troll more than a joke, and I don't like it.

Coffman: Again, we're lazy. :P Also, who would read it and heed it? Not many people. =/

>>Once again LHoT10820, don't call me a nub. I may be new to the forums but I have been a member of irc for months, and you have been a forum member for < month.<< Actually I have been here much longer, My first post was as another user, which I couldn't remember my password (I couldnt use the get password function either, forgot the email that I signed up with :P), so I rejoined as LHoT10820, I had remembered my password after chatting with haveacalc for a while in his personal forum, and I have been active at calc haven for 1yr+ (Well, CH isnt really that calc based, but... I think it counts because we still had calc related topics every now and then). Well, that post was extremly annoying, and first impressions are a lot, even on the net (I know, its scary that some social rules apply to the internet). Anyways, lets drop this (btw, I called you a n00b, not a nub :P)

@andy I'm pretty sure I could bother alex10819 enough that he'd start it. Or we could go to drastic measure, try to teach me php, or whatever languauge this board uses O.o; (that'd be scary)

@coffman that might work, maybe like a popup, or a seprate fram for the FAQ, no reason this place can't abuse more frames %_% *shot*

@captin_A i seriously doubt he was talking about you in the first place. i think he was mainly talking about the other people who tend to ask questions that are too simple to answer, but are ALWAYS asked.

LHoT: I'm sure if you're willing to do so, the mods would gladly appreciate it. But the point that they're trying to make is that that would all be really nice, except that re-writing a website (not sure if re-writing is right, but meh) is very time-consiming. Time that some people do not have. The point is, all these things would be nice, but it's not a matter of possibility, it's a matter of time. Also, as has been mentioned, the site mods are lazy. ;)

@ryantmer I would use the term over-hall

My input is this.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.

My point is the forums here work fine so why take months to update or rebuild something that doesn't need it.

I rember back when i first joined CG (6 months ago) I had alot of questions but was too afraid to ask. So I just figured them out on my own. However alot of people are not afraid to ask and guess what they are lazzy. Who would want to look threw a FAQ when they could ask a question on the forum and get the answer. I know I wouldn't.

One more thing I have never even heard of Perl

It is much easier to suggest solutions when you know nothing about the problem.

You know, everyone, it's not such a bad thing that people don't read the faq. Some of the new users just ask one or two questions, but some of them stay as well. In my opinion, this forum is in need of new members, just in the community. And while it may be annoying to be asked the same questions over and over again, personal responses are more appealing than something automatic, I think (builds up post counts, too).

To Andy: Yes, forum is old as hell. It was our first big project and Teemz was easiest to mod back in leter '01 and early '02 so there you go. And since it was out first project, we learned by it and made out mistakes which we didn't realize back then. Thogugh, maybe it's good that it doesn't have all those annoying flashy features which turn other forums into x-mas trees.

To all: I honestly don't think a quiz or something like that would work at all. It will most likely turn people from the site, even those who might know the answers. People don't like nags and that sort of stuff so I'm not sure if something can be done to make folks check FAQ first other than just hope that most would. Besides, this place would be dead if we wouldn't let people to ask easy questions, even though most are actually answered either in the FAQ or forum. Though, some sort of help wizard might be nice. Maybe it would take person through a series of questions and would display a matching result and may also drop in a forum search query to show related posts. Now that I thought about this, it may be a nice feature to have but I'm not sure if I'll have enough free time soon. What do you guys think?

@haveacalc: I was a member for a reeel long time but I never posted except on the odd occasion. Then sometime in July I went through a phase of uber-posting in which I helped lots of people out (at least ten) and joined in the War topic series (for about five posts) in DSP's forum. Then radio silence throughout August, and here I am.

@Zachary: I'm pretty sure Perl is like when you adress people using the @ in front of their name. Not positive though.

@zkostik: I really don't think anyone will use the help search thingy, any more than the FAQ. I interpreted the query as putting the entire FAQ as a sticky under Calc Discussion or something. (assuming stickies actually exist here, which they don't appear to)

@All: *random subject* You know, I thought people really liked School Survival (one of my games) but nobody's downloading the sequel. Maybe I should remove the password requirement...

>>I'm pretty sure Perl is like when you adress people using the @ in front of their name. Not positive though.<< No, that's quoting because this board doesn't have quotes, I'm not to familiar with Perl, but it's an old computer language that's (I think) similar to C. COuld somone clear that up for me please, I've confused myself.

@ Z: Yeah, I more or less know the history... I was poking fun, kinda, and informing people who didn't know at the same time.
