I have a Ti-89 and some games such as SMQ (super mario quest) will not work for it... neither does DoorsOS. What I'm really wondering is how I check my ASM version of my calculator? Anyone know?

Don't use DoorOS, use PreOS from T3. It is actually up to date.

Indeed. The best part is - due to its up-to-dateness - is that it works on all AMS versions. DoorsOS doesn't.

While I can't say for certain, if your TI-89 is relatively new, chances are it has a newer AMS than DoorsOS supports and you won't be able to install DoorsOS or run any of the games for it. You always do have the option of bugging TI for an older AMS, but I don't recommend it.

On a side note, I'm curious if anyone has reasons for upgrading from AMS 2.05. I have a HW1 so the clock feature won't work (as far as I know). The icon desktop just eats up flash ROM space which I use for apps and other software. Are there really any advantages to a newer AMS than 2.05?

I don't know about that, but what i do know is that when i bought my 89, it had AMS v2.00 on it, so i upgraded it to 2.09 (newest). gave me the clock feature and the app desktop feature as far as i know.

There are some bug fixes (I think) for ROMs higher than 2.05, plus some extra trig functions. Other than that, I don't really think you'd want to upgrade. The clock would be the only advantage I could think of, unless you like the app desktop for some reason...

My problem with the icon desktop is it results in significantly less flash ROM being available. I have the stats/list editor on my calc, which also eats up a lot of ROM. That's not a small app, but it's one I find very useful and worth its size. And the rest of my flash ROM is used archiving things I don't want to lose in the event of a reset. This means stuff I've been working on and a few games. The loss of some flash ROM is a big deal to me, especially when it's for a feature I wouldn't use. It'd be nice if TI produced a version of the AMS without the icon desktop.

And any idea what those bug fixes are? Does it make upgrading necessary?

About the clock, I bought my TI-89 towards the end of 1998. It's old and came with AMS 1.00 and is a hardware version 1 (hardware version 2 cannot run AMS 1.00). I don't believe I have the hardware for the clock to operate. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm not.

Speaking of Doors, I think it only works on AMS version up till 2.03, maybe 2.05. Either way, PreOS is the best one. Though in my opinion, UniOS which is kinda outdated seemed to be better compatible with Doors programs.

To redux: HW1 89 doesn't have a clock crystal in it so you won't be able to use the clock feat. Tho, HW1 89 produce much better grayscale than HW2. Go try that gray8 and gray16/32 if they can still be found anywhere.

DoorsOS was updated to run on 2.05 AMS, but any higher is iunknown. I never really liked UniOS that much. But as everybody said, PreOS from timetoteam is the best.

The best rom for you would probably be 2.05 Redux. I think AMS 2.00 and up added a bunch of free rom, so 2.05 is the latest before 2.06 and desktop. I've used it since release and have had no problems with it.

DoorsOS 0.98 works on 2.03 at the latest, though there is an update (0.99) that works on 2.05. I tried it on later AMS versions, and no such luck.

Perhaps we ought to post a guide to shells on the 89*/92+/V200 somewhere. You guys know them much better than I do, especially since I've been sticking to nostub stuff instead. Anyways, I think a guide would be useful since there's probably as many shells for the 89 as there were for the 85. Anyone remember ZShell, Usgard, Rigel, PhatOS, OS-85, UShell, and all the other assorted shells? :)

I sent something on that to Z once upon a time, but I don't think he ever posted it... Wonder if I still have that. I'd probably have to update it a bit if I did.
