I'm new Here but I consider myself a pretty good BASIC programmer and I'm starting to work on a program that goes in the catagory of well a fake memory reset for those who have well lets just say untrusting teachers. :img13: Well its been going along nicely so far and I just started very recently. You see I have encountered a few problems and they are not programming ones. Right now I am going to a private school and I am lucky enough to have a teacher that doesn't do memory resets before tests and quizes (although on the contrary only me and on other kid know how easy it is to program in BASIC so we're the only ones who know). But I'm going to a different school next year so I decided to start this program. Now as for the things I need help with here's a list of them stating what things I need to know.

1)What kind of resets do teachers do? all ram, all memory or does it vary by the teacher
2)do teachers ever check to make sure that the memory was reset? like go into the programs menu
3)what is the average amount of memory (RAM & ROM) that a TI-83 plus with programs on them (I own a TI-84 SE and I don't want to accidentaly make the number too large if I have to use it.

I probably will have more questions but thats it for now thanx for your help and if anyone wants to know how I am going to do this in BASIC just ask.

Edit
Teachers know how to do a hard reset. (There are several ways.) The best strategies to protect your stuff is to use MirageOS to archive and hide your programs.

He means force a reset, rather than go through the menus, which is usually better at getting rid of stuff. On a PC, it would be the difference between going to the start menu and selecting reset and pressing the reset button on your box.

nooooooooooooooooo

eh well at least I didn't get very far. there goes a great idea of mine *sigh*

well on the bright side I just finished a BASIC game called anti-nibbles i which you CAN'T touch the dots and they increase every level. I'm going to submit it soon once I finish tweaking with it such as making the splash more then just the words ANTI-NIBBLES. But if I do that I might en up messing around with the whole game itself and change something eh well

I've seen (well, had) a teacher resend the OS to a calculator before.

The best way would probably be for the teacher to press [MODE] [Alpha] [LN] [Enter]

As far as I know that gets rid of everything. At least it does on my 86. It might not get rid of the flash programs. If you are looking for a fake mem clearing program for the 86, check this program out:

http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/287/28795.html

It simulates the Memory menu of the 86 rather well, you just need to make sure the program is running when the teacher gets ahold of it. Currently it shows there being programs in the list and displays a rather odd error if you try and fake reset the mem from within the program, but all you need to do it edit some strings and you would be pretty much ready to go. It could use some improvements I admit, but It would do the trick :-)

I would like to point out that the file linked above does not reak the rules and guidelines set forth in the ticalc.org policies, so don't bother reporting it.

Hmm, I never knew that trick! (I didn't press enter when I tested it though!)Also, the teacher could just pull out the batteries... (if the calc dosn't have flash ROM)

I know, there are lots of ways if you go to mode on the 83+ and press alpha "s" you go to the self test screen and if you press enter it resets everything

Btw, what's the whole deal with fake mem programs not being allowed on ticalc? I mean, what's the big deal anyway? I know it was a thing that TI didn't like when ticalc affiliated with them but it's not the case anymore.

My teacher looks in your program menu and if you have anyhting you have to either delete it by hand with her watching or not use it. I lost a program made to hide stuff because she got to me too fast so I couldn't start it. Now I have everything important in groups. But I still have other stuff that I should put in groups just for safety but don't.

Good luck.

heh... my teachers dont even know how to delete stuff... if you want proof, take note of the fact her TI-Presenter calc has 123 RAM open... and thats only cuz some kid deleted some stuff once...(we downloaded Phoenix and mirage and played em on the TV)

I believe you but its not exactly proof just telling us that your teach has 123 RAM

true... its more like evidence... let me put it this way: me and chris (another calc programmer) convinced her that RAM was a measure of lag, the more RAM you had, the more lag you had... we also convinced her that that she didnt really need to archive stuff, that was just for games...

in other words, she has no clue...

heh... i know alot of people that do... sadly enough, she still thinks Mirage is an anti virus program, and phoenix will bring back any files she does manage to lose...(reference to mythical phoenix, died and rose from the ashes)

That's pretty bad. I have kids that think mirage is a virus and that they can code phoenix in basic :lmao_a: :lmao_a: :lmao_a: :lmao_a: :lmao_a: :lmao_a: :lmao_a: :lmao_a: :lmao_a: :lmao_a: :lmao_a: .

yup, i think i will...

problems i foresee:
1. nobody wants another cheap Phoenix knockoff
2. Speed... wait, what speed?
3. collision detection... i really dont wanna have to write a complete collision detection routine in Basic...(ok, so i did it for my maze game... but that was different)

anyone want in on this project?

You'd have to use asm libraries if you want to come up with anything decent (unless you want to use ascii chars or don't care about speed/responsiveness). Look at Kevin Ouelett's basic RPG (Reuben Quest 1 and 2). He use asm libs and not only managed to pull a very speedy prog, he actually has grayscale in it. Very cool.

what? NOOO!!! *cough* i was just gonna use ASCII chars on the graph screen with PixelTest for collision detection... funstuff... right?
