Don't you hate it when............

You are at a TI calculator website. You are delighted to discover that they have an enormous archive of awesome games. You eagerly browse the archives, looking for that one game that you know will have the best graphics you've ever seen, a great storyline, and many challenging levels.

You finally find your Holy-Grail. The game has a long description and an appealing title. The description convinces you this game will be the best you've ever played. It describes the game as being challenging, multi-leveled (includes a level editor), an RPG-format, and an adventure-type story line. A shoot-em-up style of game. It even has a high rating.

You download it, transfer it to your calculator. You quickly erxecute the application............................................

...................and then, you realize it is COMPLETELY text-based! What a disappointment!

No one can truly love an all-text game. Let's face it -- they are usualy boring.

The moral-of-the-story:
Don't attach exaggerated descriptions when submitting text-based games into the archives. If you do, I will bribe a police-officer to pull you over, arrest you for speeding, and impound your car as "stolen property"! :)

No one can truly love an all-text game. Let's face it -- they are usualy boring.

Actually, I was not really refering to any one particular calculator website when I originaly started this thread.

TiCalc.org is overrun by files with false descriptions. However, they also happen to have (within their massive archives) the best-of-the-best of any program or app ever written for Texas Instruments calculators. The selection over there really is rather impressive.

I hate it when some websites reject your file you submitted for the reason that "they already have a similar program in their archives". You may find that TICalc.org has 8 quadratic-solver programs, but each one is still SOMEWHAT different from the others. :)

TI-Calc is awful at filtering the files This web site is great it may tkae longer to get your file on the web but it is worth it! I just submited abot 5 files about 4 days ago and they are still not up but I know they will make it if they are good enough

I don't mind them filtering through the submitted files, but I prefer that they do not become to picky about awhat they choose to approve. Half of these calculator websites have archives that are far too tiny to be picky about approving submitted programs. :)

What?!?!? You guys have never played any of the classic text adventure games like ADVENT or Zork?!?!?!

A lot of those games are really fun!

This is all fairly obvious stuff. It happens all the time, there's no use complaining about it. It's going to happen, and there isn't going to be any let-up. Just leave it alone. Besides, if it all went away, you'd probably complain about something else.

And considering your post counts, you haven't seen it like we have.

>>>No one can truly love an all-text game. Let's face it -- they are usualy boring.<<<

Also, I take offense to that statement. I LOVE text-based games. As a writer, I feel that if done well, a text game can act as a book, a portal to a written world. Back in the past, many popular games used to be text-only. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was an amazing text game for the PC (and I think it's somewhere on the BBC website, actually, so you can look it up) that was not only a huge hit, but hysterical. I put a lot of effort into my text games most of the time, and always have, and I know it isn't always easy to make one. I've made some graphical games that I'd consider repetative crap. Never, ever say that you can't love a text game. It's like saying that no one likes to read.

My opinion is my own, but NEVER attack people's work, especially when they've worked really hard on it. You probably didn't mean anything personal, though.

Ooo, Andy, thanks for mentioning those! I forgot their names.

Andy:
I will take your word on that one..... ;-)

JcCorp"

Okay first let's get some things out on the table:

Postscounts are not accurate measurements of knowledge. In fact, I tend to notice, that at larger forums, that some people post waaaaay more than they really should......

1) My original point was an "attack" on those programmers who's skill with code exceeds their ability to describe their creations accurately. I'm sorry if you find this in some manner offensive. But quite frankly, I'm tired of seeing programs with fallacious descriptions (yes, I know I've spent way to much time over at ticalc.org...).

2) I made no specific mention of any specific program or programmer. Hence, it would be an injustice to accuse me of attacking others' programs. I was merely conveying a personal opinion about a TYPE of program that I find particularily boring......

and yes, I'm well-acquainted with Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy...........but let us bear in mind a key distinction here --- that was for a PC, not a calculator (although at that time there was not much of a difference between the two...:) ). Besides, it was produced well before all of the "good" graphics-heavy games were even a thought -- thus, this is not a valid comparison. :)

some of the text-based programs have about 1 or 2 pics, that's it. then they trick you into thinking their not text-based by using the pics as screenshots. happened to me before. t'was a horrible game.

I'm not talking about knowledge, I'm talking about experience. From your profile, I take it that you have been on this site for about 2 months. I've been on for two years. I've seen a LOT more than you in the n00b department. And even then, this site has been up since 2002. How do you think the administrators feel?

Also, there were plenty of decent games out at the time of the text-only games. Pac-man was an amazing game for its time, it was the first to introduce an actual character into the world of gaming.

Maybe I was just in a bad mood yesterday, I dunno. I'm sorry for blaming you for those things, it's just that I kinda get frustrated when people say text isn't fun. I do agree that certain games lack a decent description. But hey, you're talking about ticalc.org. Why are you even looking through 99% of the BASIC games there? I know there are some good ones, but odds are that you're just going to find another clone of snake.

hmm.. ticalc... with all there files (can't even load the basic games section!), they really need a better search feature... otherwise, all of your good text games get lost with the others.

Well I'm no newbie to calculator games.............

My older brother got me into these calculators when I was about 12 (he was in highschool, at the time).

......but I really prefer if we just drop this whole debate and remain on amicable terms here. I like this site, I feel the administrators run it well, and members form a great community...

ant anyrate, I really do agree that I was wasting my time looking trough those BASIC games over a ticalc.org. However, I did come accross a few very helpfull BASIC programs that helped me with math. And I even found a rather impressive BASIC version of DOOM (it's called "TIDOOM". This is probably the best BASIC program I've ever come across in the past 5 years).

I didn't really mean for this thread to turn into this, if you catch my drift.......:)
