Should I read my manual?
Answer:
Absolutely! Not only is it permissable, but we encourage it! You can find solutions to many frequently asked questions not asked here in the guidebook, along with informative, illustrated, step-by-step tutorials on how to use the calculator and its features. You can also find more information about specific error codes, a command reference, and other useful information.

You can find the TI-83+ guidebook (appropriate for all calculators in this section) on this page as well. It requires the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Are the 83+SE/84+SE fully compatible with each other?
Answer:
Yes! In a rare instance of TI doing something correctly, all programs that work on the 83+/SE will work on an 84+SE. There are a few exceptions, but they're few and far inbetween. Also keep in mind that the 84+SE has a few extra functions and commands that the 83+SE doesn't support, so programs made specifically for the 84+SE may not work properly on your 83+/SE.

How do I run a program or application?
Answer:
You can run programs by pressing the [PRGM] button from the homescreen, pressing the down button (or [ALPHA]+the first letter of the program) until the program you want is selected, and pressing [ENTER] twice.

To run an app, press the [APPS] button from the homescreen, press the down button until the application you want to run is selected (or [ALPHA]+the first letter of the app), then press [ENTER] once.

What applications do I need?
Answer:

Texas Instruments has a wide variety of applications for the TI-83+ and TI-83+SE, the TI-84+ and TI-84+SE, and other calculators. Be sure that you are using the most recent version of the operating system on your calculator (you can run this by clicking the "Updates" button in TI Connect).

There are a wide variety of third-party applications available as well. To run games, we suggest running MirageOS, which will run Mirage- and Ion-formatted games. For math, you might want to check out Graph³ by Kirk Meyer (to graph three-dimensional equations), Symbolic by Brandon Sterner (adds symbolic functions), and Cabamap by Mike Vincent (uses a different kind of input than the default homescreen). Also by Mike Vincent is Omnicalc, which adds various functions and utilities to the calculator.

84+: How do I check and set the time?
Answer:

You can check the time by pressing the [MODE] button. The time will be displayed at the bottom. To set the time, scroll down to "SET TIME" and hit [ENTER]. This will take you to a menu where you can change the time and date.

To turn the clock on and off, go to the catalog and select either ClockOn or ClockOff.

There are also third-party programs, such as this one, that can graphically manage the time on your calculator.

I sent a program/game to my calculator, but it isn't showing up in my APPS menu. Help!
Answer:
The main reason your program isn't showing up in the APPS menu is the basic fact that it isn't an app. A Flash Application is a special type of ASM program that will show up in the APPS menu, almost all programs for the 83/84 series aren't FlashApps. The most notable FlashApp is probably MirageOS, a shell that enables the user to run other ASM programs, such as games. You can find your program in the PRGM menu, which is found by pressing the always convenient PRGM button located on your calculator's keypad.

Even if you drag your program to the Apps folder on TI-Device Explorer, it still will not show up as an application.

My Calculator isn't running a program due to low memory, or a program won't send due to a "Insufficient Memory Error."
Answer:
Your RAM (the area where programs are run) is probably filled up with other programs or variables. You should try archiving some of them to make more room to run a program.

If your link program won't send a program/app to the archive, try deleting some FlashAPPS or archived programs/variables.

My 83/84 is showing weird slanted lines on ASM programs, what's happening?
Answer:
You're one of the unfortunate souls who has a less than optimal LCD Driver. It's a hardware problem. If you're not satisfied with the amazing LCD Fix, the only thing you can do is wait for an updated version of MirageOS to be released. Before you ask, no you can't beta test and it'll be released whenever it's released. You can read this thread on the Detached Solutions forum for more details.

Some of my games aren't showing up in MirageOS/ION!
Answer:
Not all games/programs are MirageOS compatible. Almost all ASM games will show up in Mirage's file manager, but many basic programs do not. You'll have to run those manually through the Prgm Menu. Unarchiving/Archiving may be necessary to run them.
Also, ION only supports ION assembly programs -- it doesn't support MirageOS format assembly programs or basic programs at all. You'll need to use MirageOS to run MirageOS programs, and the PRGM button to run basic programs.

I'm trying to send Mario to my calculator, but I can't send nagel.8xp. What gives?
Answer:
Mario.8xp and Medit.8xp send just fine because they are in the correct format. Nagel.8xp is just a renamed 82 file, so TI Connect is saying it isn't compatible. What you can do is either:
  • Open Nagel.8xp in Notepad or some other text editor and change the beginning of the file from **TI82** to **TI83F*
  • Download a fixed version.

For more information, see this thread on the Detached Solutions forum.

What are the best games for my calc?
Answer:
Since there are so many games to choose from, and since this question comes up so often, threefingeredguy came up with the bright idea of listing the best games for the 83/84/+/SE series and the 89/89T. (copied from topic http://www.calcgames.org/cgi-bin/teemz/teemz.cgi?board=_master&action=opentopic&topic=1295&forum=Discussion)

83+/83+SE/84+/84+SE
These games require MirageOS to run. It can be found under "Misc: Shells"
-Super Mario
-Phoenix/Galaxian
-Space Station Pheta
-Pac-Man 99
-Lotus Turbo Challenge
-Wolfenstein83
-zDOOM

These games can be run directly from the Programs menu. They are written in BASIC and therefore are slower and less graphical. However, they are still fun.
-A Dot RPG
-Age of Darkness Series
-Bob Game
-Final Fantasy: TOM and TOM2 (note, will not work at ALL on a regular 83+)
-Illusiat series
-Legend of Zelda
-Metroid
-Metroid II: Evolution
-Metroid Pure
-Starcraft Protoss
-Reign Of Legends series
-Reuben Quest 1 and 2
-XXR

89/89T
You will often have to install a kernel to play some of these games, but I do not know what you will need to do for each game. Please read the README file that comes with the file for installation instructions.
-Arena3D
-BlockMan
-BomberMaze68k
-ChronoFantasy
-Galaxian/Phoenix
-Jezzball
-Kirby
-Tankers

I don't know anything about the BASIC games for the 89, so try them for yourself.
